Are you suffering from nagging or extreme neck pain and not sure what to do about it? Have you been to the medical doctor and left with steroid injections, muscle relaxers, and pain relievers? If you answered yes to any of the above questions this article is for you. Some people reading this article might know nothing about chiropractic or chiropractors and some might go to one every month. In either situation, this article will educate both kinds of patients on neck pain and how to get relief. The more you learn about your neck pain, the easier it will become to beat it and live pain free.

The neck and cervical spine house the upper portion of the spinal cord. The neck consists of 7 vertebrae that make up the cervical spine. Between each vertebra or bone is a jelly-like disc that acts as a shock absorber. Between each vertebra is a spinal nerve that goes to various other parts of the upper torso and upper extremity. Each spinal nerve innervates a very specific area of your arm or upper body.

If interference occurs along a spinal nerve pathway a whole array of problems can begin to manifest. A spinal nerve can get compressed by a joint, trapped by a muscle, or irritated by any surrounding tissues. A compressed nerve is what some doctors refer to as a “pinched nerve.” This pinched nerve can cause pain, numbness, tingling, or burning in the arm and fingers. Some conditions that can cause interference in a spinal nerve pathway are disc bulge, degenerative joint disease, cervical spine stenosis, and muscle spasm.

If you are suffering from neck and arm pain, you might want to see a chiropractic doctor. It is likely you have one of the conditions mentioned above. Chiropractic doctors are well trained to diagnosis the different types of neck conditions and can offer drugless and non-invasive treatment options. A chiropractic doctor will take a thorough history and x-rays to rule out carcinogenic conditions before he/she recommends care.

If you choose chiropractic treatment for your neck pain; your care can consist of physiotherapy, manipulation, home stretches, rehabilitation exercises, and proper work ergonomics. It is your doctor’s job to figure out the cause of your pain and give you the appropriate treatment.

Spinal decompression treatment is a non-surgical, drugless, and non-invasive treatment that has helped patients who have suffered from bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, or facet syndrome. Over the past 15 years its popularity has been rising as it represents an excellent alternative to surgery. The cost of spinal decompression is less than 5% of the cost of surgery, and the risk profile is very low.

The science behind spinal decompression works the same for both cervical and lumbar. Spinal Decompression Therapy is designed to take the pressure off the bulging disc and compressed nerves by slowly and gently stretching the spine at a certain angle followed by cycles of partial relaxation. This pattern of distraction and relaxation creates a “vacuum effect” or negative intra-discal pressure.

Nerve damage caused by severe pressure to the cervical nerve roots is known as Cervical Radiculopathy. Symptoms are pain, numbness, tingling, and/or muscle weakness in the regions of the shoulders, arms, hands, or fingers. Common causes include disc bulging, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, and facet syndrome.

Length of treatment depends on how advanced and severe your spinal injury is. A typical treatment regimen consists of about 15-25 sessions over 4-6 weeks. Treatment sessions last between 20 and 45 minutes. Patients often fall asleep during treatment, because it is safe and relaxing.

Spinal decompression is often performed in conjunction with other pain management treatments. These may include chiropractic treatment, physical therapy, acupuncture, interferential treatment, ice, or heat. With spinal decompression therapy, patients have a very good chance of avoiding surgery while being able to return to work, exercising, playing with kids and pets.

There are a variety of reasons due to which neck and shoulder pain can be caused. It could be due to the lifting of heavy objects, sleeping in an awkward position or poor posture. Injury can also be cause of great discomfort. Usually the neck pain could disappear after a couple of days but is some cases it can be recurring and needs immediate attention.

Based on the constant moving of the neck, it tends to be more opened to injury and if prompt attention is not conducted, it can become even more physically agonizing. The usual signs of problems of the injury can be a tingly feeling or deadness or unable to conduct the daily tasks.

There is the possibility also of inflammation in the injured body part. The human being’s body is composed of numerous muscles and each have a different role to play. Then again, despite their various functions, they need each function to work accordingly and injury in any area can cause great hurt in all these different areas.

Cerebral pressure and the style of living have also been known as one of the leading factors of the various body aches. Additionally, the mixture of pain in the shoulder and neck, contributes to many issues and moving around liberally may become limited because of the ache.

The best means of reducing the ache is to get an anti-inflammatory cream and apply it on the injured areas for immediate remedy. Many persons usually take pain killers to reduce this bad sensation. However, continuous use of these medicines can bring even more problems and are recommended not to be consumed frequently.

If an individual suffers from severe pain, it will be advisable to consult a physician who will be able to diagnose the reasons behind it. The hurt in the neck or shoulder region can also be an indication of some problem in the spinal cord. The spine could be misaligned and it will be best to sought early treatment as the problem could get aggravated.

There are a number of exercises that are specifically targeted to treat the pain in the neck and shoulder area. It would be advisable to prevent any form of injuries and protection should be worn to help in this purpose.

Depending on the severity of the pain, the physician might advise complete bed rest for quick relief. If the problem is due to an injury, it will be advisable to visit a physician for diagnosis about the nature of the injury. If an individual is overweight, it will be best to reduce it as excess weight on the body will affect overall health.

In some cases surgery might be required to help get rid of the pain permanently. Simple exercises that help build the core strength of these muscles is highly recommended. It will be best not to indulge in any physical activity that can aggravate it. Exercising on a daily basis is often considered ideal to develop and strengthen the muscles.

Before you seek treatment or buy anything to help treat yourself visit the site of NYC Chiropractor for more information.

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, also known as TOS, is a compression of either spinal nerves or blood vessels. The brachial plexus supplies the upper limb with both sensory and motor nerve fibers, and the subclavian artery supplies the blood supply. There are four areas where the plexus and artery may be and in each instance, the symptoms will present differently.

Due to involvement of the medial cord of the brachial plexus, the ulnar nerve is most impacted by this compression syndrome. Muscles affected will be the Flexor Carpi Ulnaris. As a result, there can be pain, altered sensation, and muscle wasting on the ulnar aspect of the forearm, hand and possibly fingers. Compression of blood vessels may result in pain, paleness of the skin, and decreased skin temperature. Prolonged decrease of blood supply can result in trophic skin changes, emboli (blood clots) and gangrene. Compression of a vein will result in edema.

There are 4 main areas where compression may occur: 1)The anterior and middle scalene (aka the interscalene triangle). The brachial plexus and subclavian artery pass through here, but it is the medial cord of the plexus, arising from the C8-T1 nerve roots, that is most likely affected. 2) Pectoralis minor – hypertonicity of this muscle will compression the subclavian artery as it becomes the axillary artery when it passes through the clavicle. 3) Costoclavicular – compression occurs between the 1st rib and the clavicle. This is usually due to a clavicle break or dislocation, and is prone to affect the vasculature, as the axillary vein becomes the subclavian vein. 4) Presence of a cervical rib – the presence of an extra rib is determined by an x-ray, and it interferes with the size of the interscalene triangle, therefore allowing less room for the plexus and vasculature.

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome usually affects people whose posture tends to be very forward and slumping. Think of a person who sits at a desk all day, or who does a lot of work moving forward (massage therapist and dentist). Others who are also at risk are people with “military posture”. Such posture causes extreme retraction of the shoulders which pull the pectorialis minor tight over the plexus and artery, thus compressing it.

Chiropractic therapy can provide valuable assistance to someone suffering from TOS, either as a stand-alone treatment, or in conjunction with other modalities (i.e. physiotherapy or massage).Wherever the location of compression, your chiropractor will correct the misalignment of the cervical and thoracic spine to release nerve impingement, decrease hypertonicity of the involved muscles as well as stretching. After the treatment plan concludes, it would be wise to encourage the client to continue stretching and keep a better posture, and also to schedule maintenance appointments to prevent a relapse.

A common complaint for many individuals is shoulder pain, and this is the reason that many people seek out the services of chiropractors. Shoulder pain should be treated quickly after onset to avoid the development of a recurring problem. This type of pain can benefit from the services of a chiropractor. Chiropractic treatment will be patient oriented. It will target the cause that is specific to the problem. There are various signs that signal the need for care: inability to carry objects, raise the arm, or pain at night or during rest.

Before administration of chiropractic treatment, it is necessary to determine the underlying cause of the pain. It is often necessary for certain tests to be performed such as X-rays or MRI. A complete and detailed medical history will be gathered from the patient as well. Chiropractors will assess and evaluate the neck and other areas to see if there is a problem that is causing the pain to radiate into the shoulder. Once this information is gathered, it is used to make a diagnosis and plan of care. The plan of care suggested by your chiropractor will be based on the underlying cause of the pain and the severity of the damage.

Many individuals do not gain immediate relief from a manipulation. It often takes several sessions before any amount of pain is alleviated. There are measures that individuals can practice at home to help in the process of healing. Some of these are as follows: rest, applying ice/heat, stretching, and possibly taking anti-inflammatory medications for the first few days.

Once the pain has been alleviated by the chiropractor’s treatments, patients should continue to follow an exercise regimen as recommend. This will lessen the chance of a recurrence of the problem. Exercise will promote the stability and endurance of the joint as well as the strength.

Shoulder pain doesn’t have to prevent an individual from enjoying life and chiropractic care is a way to quickly and effectively deal with the problem. Chiropractors also help you by giving advice as to how to change your lifestyle so that you can prevent shoulder and arm injuries in the future.

One question that I hear all the time from my patients is “how does my wife or husband know if they should be seeing a chiropractor?” There are multiple ways to know if you should be seeing a chiropractor and not all of them have to do with pain and discomfort. I have developed a test for the neck to determine if you are a candidate for chiropractic care called the “head turn test”.

The way that you perform the head turn test is to simply turn your head as far as you can to the left and then to the right. Do either of those motions give you any pain? Secondly, are either of these motions hard to do or restricted? A normal range of motion (or your ability to turn your head to the left and the right) is you being able to turn your head to a 90 degree angle (or parallel with your shoulder). Is there pain, or restricted range of motion?

When you do the head turn test, and you feel pain or restriction during the movements this can be a possible sign that you have dysfunction in the bones and joints of your neck. When you work at a desk all day or simply sleep in a poor manner this can put a tremendous amount of stress on your neck. Even worse may be old and new injuries, such as falls, or car accidents that can literally tear the structures of the neck and make it even more susceptible to pain or restriction.

A Bellevue chiropractor will be able to diagnose what the cause of this restriction or pain in your neck. All too often the major causation of this type of dysfunction is what we call “joint fixation” or the bones and joints getting stuck out of their proper position. I see this type of neck most often in those whiplash cases, or in cases of prolonged, poor posture, such as sitting at a desk.

A person with a neck like this may already have neck pain, headaches, pain in their shoulders, arm and hand pain, but they also may not have any pain at all. Even if you are one with out any current pain, if you are presenting with a positive head turn test, it is my experience that the reason for this is probably that you have vertebral subluxation, or bones and joints in your neck being out of place.

Michael Weir, D.C.is a practiceing Bellevue chiropractor and is the clinic director at Back in Action Chiropractic Center. His clinicis located at 1940 116th Ave NE #101, Bellevue WA 98004 and the number is (425) 635-0495.

In my clinic patients who receive spinal decompression treatment for herniated discs are first treated with ultrasound to heat up the connective tissue allowing the tissue to elongate easier. Ultrasound treatment prior to spinal decompression makes the treatment more effective.

Lumbar (low back) herniated disc patients are treated with spinal decompression treatment by being placed on a long table either face up or face down. A harness is secured around the chest and another harness around the waist line just above the big wing bones of the pelvis. The table is then adjusted to give the patient comfort and greater treatment effectiveness.

A harness is placed around the chest and another harness is placed around the lower back at the belt line just above the big wings bones of the pelvis. The table will then be adjusted for comfort and to enhance treatment effectiveness. Then a cable, from a computerized traction head, is connected to the lower harness and the lower half of the table is released to allow it to slide creating the decompression effect.

The traction head is set with a treatment time ranging from 10-15 minutes. The pull pattern is typically set for 45 seconds of pull and then relaxes to 20 pounds of pressure for 25 seconds. Lumbar disc patient are typically started at 30% of their body weight and proceed up to 90 pounds of traction if necessary. The least amount of traction that gives the best relief is the best choice to treat and more traction pressure is not always better.

Herniated disc treatment of the cervical spine starts with the patient lying face up with their head in a sliding carriage that has two cushions placed below the base of the skull. The patients head is strapped to the carriage and the traction cable is then connected to sliding carriage.

Pull patterns of traction in the cervical spine begin at 15-25 pounds for 45 seconds and release to a resting hold of 5 pounds for 25 seconds. Traction of the cervical spine should not exceed 40 pounds. Treatment time are 15 minutes for most patients.

Spinal decompression patients should plan for 30 minutes of treatment for one area and 45 minutes for both, cervical and lumbar regions.

Spinal decompression therapy: 1) rarely causes problems, 2) effectiveness is likely, 3) FDA cleared, 4) does not require surgery, and 5) most patient find it affordable.

At times, the shoulder and arm pain occur due to obvious reasons. For example, if an object fell onto the arm or if you hit the arm against something. Sometimes, the pain develop right away, other times, it might take a few days. Eventually, you find out that you may have fractured a bone, dislocated a joint, or just bruised it.

Over reacting or exerting your arm while playing sports, straining tendons or ligaments by carrying heavy weights, keeping your arm in weird positions, or sleeping on your shoulder are some of the reasons that can cause shoulder or arm pain. The pain may result in irritation and frustration and can end up in making it hard for you to use the arm. There are very little chances of these injuries to turn into a more serious problem.

Shoulder and arm pain can also evolve due to pain in some other parts of your body. For example, a person suffering from a heart attack also suffers pain in the left shoulder and left arm. The pain can also be induced from nerves that are associated with the upper spine joints or particular points in the back. These are responsive to spinal adjustments by chiropractors.

Your chiropractic doctor will be in a position to put you under the right kind of treatment. It is important to first find out the cause of the pain and then start treatment accordingly as varied situations have varied seriousness and causes. Your chiropractor will also determine if the problem is easy to handle or if it is serious and will require immediate medical attention. There are different ways to treat different problems. You would treat fractured bones differently than you would a tendonitis or bursitis. Gout and arthritis are treated differently than pain that originate from nerve impingement. As your chiropractic doctor, I will determine the cause of your shoulder or am pain by doing specific tests to diagnose your exact condition.

Chiropractic treatment can be used to treat frozen shoulder, a bad inflammation which is also known as adhesive capsulitis. Your chiropractor are well trained to treat pain and trigger points that are located between the shoulder and the spine. Professional and novice athletes that injure their arms or shoulders need to undergo proper treatment and rehabilitation. Your chiropractic doctor can also help give you advice as to how to change your lifestyle so that you can prevent shoulder and arm injuries in the future.

In San Diego, many people come to New Century Spine Centers to get rid of their neck pain. One of the most annoying things that chiropractic patients complain of is stiff neck pain, more so if it recurs often within short span of time. It is very important that you get permanent relief from this pain rather than ignoring it and taking self medication.

When you ensure that you avail treatment to the cause of the problem and not the symptoms, you can be sure the pain will never come back to torment you ever again. Unfortunately, people most often resort to expensive medication or surgical procedures which do nothing much than burning a hole in your pocket.

Instead of running to the doctor at the first instance of stiff neck pain, there are many things you can do on your own at home to ensure you get rid of this ache. The solution to the most chronic problem sometimes lies in the simplest of things.

The first step is to ensure you maintain right posture while sleeping and sitting. Quite often it is the incorrect posture that is the root cause of stiff neck pain. Ensure you give sufficient support to your neck and back at all times to keep stiff neck pain at bay. A sedentary lifestyle can also give rise to aches and pains in the neck and upper back region of the body. Make sure you exercise regularly for at least thirty minutes each day to prevent any problem related to the neck.

It is also beneficial to know the different things that you can do once you have developed stiff neck pain. In fact, the first thing that you should be doing is to take a break from your work or anything that might be worsening the pain. You should be opting for exercises and simple chiropractic care that can help relieve the tension in the area. The chiropractors at New Century Spine Centers in San Diego regularly treat patients with neck pain. Paying attention to your body when it is crying for help is an extremely wise thing to do, and even mandatory, unless you want to be in an extremely bad shape in the future.

Neck pain is one pain that many people have to at least once in their life. Pain in the upper back and neck can be caused by a vehicle accident, a hit on the head, or just simply being stressed out. There are many treatments that can help with the pain and they should be discussed with a doctor before attempting to do them.

Pains in the neck and jaws can often mean a serious medical condition. Neck, jaw and upper back pain and pressure can often be signs of heart problems in woman. This needs to be taken seriously by both the doctor and patient. Further tests should be performed to rule out any potentially deadly condition in the heart or blood vessels that surround the heart.

When the neck is injured in a vehicle accident, medical attention is required immediately. This can be a sign of the painful condition known as whip lash and is the most common injury to those that have been hit from behind. The violent and sudden jolt causing the neck muscles and bones to be jarred, causing them to become very sore for sometimes weeks on end.

Some accidents are even more tragic that others, causing severe injuries to the spinal column and often breaking bones in the neck. This requires even more time to recover from, if recovery is even possible. Many patients that have sustained such devastating injuries can be fully aware of what is going on around them, but unable to speak or move because of the severity of the injuries.

Arthritis is often a cause for some pain that radiates in the neck area. Those that are diagnosed with this condition often have a lot of pain in the hips and neck area. The patient's doctor can often recommend special medications to help with most of the pain.

A pain that is caused from muscle tightness is the easiest one to treat. Stress can cause the neck to tense up, causing pain in the area and sometimes severe tension headaches. This is easily treated by a prescription from the doctor for a pain reliever mixed with a muscle relaxor. Talk to your doctor about controlling the pain in head and neck because of tension and stress.

To discover more about what could be causing neck pain, talk to your doctor or do a little research on line on the subject of neck injuries and conditions that cause the pain. Before trying any remedies to relieving the pain, talk to the pharmacist or doctor.
