Researchers have discovered that sleep is vital to physical and mental health. However, the benefits of sleep do not occur until the dreaming stage signified by rapid eye movement, REM, is reached. This means the sleeper must be able to relax into deep sleep. If discomfort occurs, the stage and its benefits are lost. Once lost, they are very difficult to recover. A memory foam mattress is like sleep insurance, because it provides consistent comfort.

Way back in the 1970’s, NASA was trying to find a way to help make launches less stressful on the bodies of their astronaut crews. NASA’s engineers were trying to make a kind of foam cushioning that would offer soft support to the body and would also maintain its shape. And so, visco elastic memory foam was born. The unique properties of this foam allowed for uniform distribution of weight and the ability to easily adapt to body position changes. Following many years of research and development, Tempurpedic introduced the first memory foam beds to the consumer market in the early 90’s.

After nearly three weeks of tossing and turning at night, I decided it was time to invest in a new bed. Well, of course, I had seen Tempur beds and mattresses advertised on TV – you’ll remember the ad, where the mattress moulds to the body for even weight distribution and spinal support and comfort. The technology for this came from the 70’s NASA space programme, when special seating had to be designed to help astronauts at lift-off and re-entry to absorb the powerful G-forces.
