Dr. Mike Pritsker is a chiropractic doctor at New Century Spine Centers in San Diego. As a chiropractor, he regularly reviews different research with his patients. In the following article, he reveals some of the latest exercise and health research. According to a Study published in the Journal of Physiology that was published on November 1, 2010, a fat-rich energy dense diet is an important cause of insulin resistance in the body.

Insulin resistance is a condition where the body produces insulin but does not use it properly in the body. Insulin is a hormone made by the organ known as the pancreas. It helps the cells in the body absorb the substance glucose. When someone is insulin resistant, their muscle, fat, and liver cells do not respond correctly to insulin. As a result, their bodies need more insulin to help glucose enter the cells. The pancreas produces more insulin until it gets worn out and it starts to fail. This can lead to diabetes in individuals.

How is this all linked to exercise? According to the study’s author, “This study, for the first time, shows that fasted training is more potent than fed training to facilitate adaptations in muscle and to improve whole-body glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity during hyper-caloric fatrich diets.”

From this it may be obtained that the best time to work out may seem to be on an empty stomach. This is usually first thing in the morning. Working out in the morning also has some additional great benefits. Generally after working out in the morning, the day seems to be more productive and you get more done. And of course on top of this it’s always great to start off the day knowing that you got a healthy workout out of the way.

New Century Spine Centers is located in San Diego. They regular have health classes monthly at their Mission Valley location. To register you may contact them at 619-630-9153. The classes are free of charge but you must be pre-registered for the event to attend. They go over great stretches, exercises and more. This is a class that everyone should attend.

Statistics say that most of us (two thirds) are overweight. Some of us are even severely overweight…obese. Why does carrying extra weight matter? It matters because it jeopardizes our good health and our very lives. Many of us are motivated to lose weight because we hope to look better. That’s a normal aspiration, but looking good is not as significant as our health. Being overweight for a long time can have many detrimental health issues, such as Stroke, High Blood Pressure, Diabetes Type 2, and Osteoarthritis.

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or severely reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and food. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. Whatever parts of the body were controlled by the deprived area will be affected. A stroke can cause you to lose your ability to walk, speak, move, or even think.

Having high blood pressure can lead to brain damage, heart disease, and kidney failure. Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Each time your heart beats, it pumps out blood into the arteries. Your blood pressure is highest when your heart beats, pumping the blood. This is called systolic pressure. When your heart is at rest, between beats, your blood pressure falls. This is the diastolic pressure. When the heart has to work too hard to do its job, it will become enlarged. Enlarged bicep muscles may be good…enlarged heart muscle is not!

People who are overweight are more likely to have insulin resistance, because fat interferes with the body’s ability to use insulin. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is caused by a problem in the way your body makes or uses insulin. Insulin is needed to move blood sugar (glucose) into cells, where it is stored and later used for energy. With Diabetes Mellitus the body does not respond correctly to insulin, as a result, blood sugar does not get into cells and creates a build up in the blood, hence giving you Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Obesity is a serious condition that can not be taken lightly. Aside from the organic problems, you will also develop mechanical abnormalities involving joint degradation. Osteoarthritis is a commonly called “wear and tear” arthritis because it results from years of too much pressure on joints. Obesity leads to more weight (pressure) on the joints and joints such as the knees will eventually wear down. Joint pain and swelling results from bone-on-bone contact. There are many more conditions that develop or worsen because of excess body fat. The umbrella effect is reduced life expectancy.

Bench Press is literally the Benchmark to gauge your Strength. I am going to share some cool tips I use to help my members increase their Bench Press faster.

Bench Press is the Best chest exercise and is one of the 3 Olympic moves and for good reason. It tests real strength in your shoulders, chest and arms like no exercise does.

Simple Things you can do right now

Using the right technique is absolute key to press more. For example if you do not use all the muscles – both prime movers and stabilizers, how can you max your bench press? Lets see how you can increase bench press in your first workout.

1. Is your technique absolutely correct?

Making sure you are using a proper technique is vital if you want to improve your bench press. Some bodybuilders make the dangerous mistake of the wrong grip, which puts them at a high risk of injury and makes their efforts more difficult.

Avoid using what is known as the suicide grip at all times. To prevent this, make sure that your thumbs come up over the bar during your grip. Also, keep your feet planted firmly on the floor while you are doing your bench press. You can utilize your back, glutes, hamstrings, other muscle groups during your bench press when your feet are kept on the floor.

3. High bench press is all in the proper reps and sets

Keep a journal to record you reps and sets for every workout. This helps you aim for constant improvements in every workout and help you lift more, even if 1-2 reps in every next coming workout.

The heavier you lift, the more you grow.

3. Check if you are progressing as planned

It is a good idea to evaluate your progress as you go through your journey to improve your bench press. Most people understand the benefits of setting short term and long term goals. However, they may not realize they need to assess their growth along the way.

Use your journal to see if your current workout is helping you lift more.

4. Eat to Press Harder not to Get Fatter

High quality proteins and carbohydrates with essential fats can make or break your gym efforts.

Eat at least 30-40 grams of high quality proteins and 50-100 grams of carbohydrates to repair those damaged tissues.

5. Grow Your Muscle While Resting

By now you know that you actually grown when resting. So get quality 8 hours sleep at night for best muscle growth.

Make sure you do not neglect your other muscles. Workout out Squats and Deadlifts on non-bench days to build overall growth.

Now its time to Bench Press and press hard, hard and hard.

Abdul Matynne is the author of the ebook “The TEN Commandments of Weight Training“.

Building a medical exercise-training program is a great way to fight the effects of the economic slowdown. I have recently spoken with numerous facilities attempting to add medical fitness programming to their services. Incorporating a medical fitness program is an excellent concept but you need a plan to get the program moving. The biggest obstruction for most fitness facilities is the lack of a comprehensive plan. You need a plan that will allow you to link up with medical professionals, handle a broad range of post rehab clients and put together your programs to meet the needs of medical professionals and clients in your neighborhood. There are 15 steps required to put a medical exercise training/post rehab program into your practice. These steps are listed below. Make use of these keys to “Bridge the Gap Between Health Care and Fitness” and create your post rehab program.

1.	The first step is to appoint a post rehab/medical exercise training director or liaison for the program. 2.	You need to review all of your current client files and compile a list of physicians, physical therapists and chiropractors listed on the medical history forms of your clients. 3.	You need to identify the 10 most common conditions you administer to in your facility and establish criteria that each client diagnosed with these conditions must meet to become a client in the medical exercise program. You should also use the post rehab protocols as the basis for all your training programs. 4.	You need to enroll in mandatory post rehab education/certification programs. 5.	You need to determine if added fitness equipment or equipment alterations are necessary for your facility.

6.	Establish a target medical marketing list noting the names of medical professionals in your community with whom you wish to develop referral relationships. 7.	Package your fitness services with the needs of medical professionals and medical exercise clients in mind. 8.	Establish a medical exercise training/post rehab fitness-marketing package to give to clients, medical professionals and insurance carriers. The package should be modified for each group for each of the fore mentioned groups. 9.	Establish a distinct pricing schedule for the medical exercise training/post rehab program. Post rehab fitness services should be priced at least 20% higher than standard fitness services. The post rehab assessment should be priced 25 – 50% above the standard fitness assessment. 10.	Contact every physician listed in your client files by sending an introductory letter and medical fitness-marketing package.

11. You need to make presentations to each medical professional on your target list stressing the benefits of your medical fitness program and summarizing how your program packages would benefit them. 12.	You need to put together an intake process for your medical exercise training and post rehab fitness clients. The process should have all of the necessary forms and paperwork to keep a record of the services you provide to the client. 13.	You need to add in the musculoskeletal screening into the first assessment for all medical exercise and post rehab clients. 14.	You need to establish a follow-up procedure to make contact with each new client’s physician after the assessment and the preparation of the conditioning program have been completed 15.	You need to learn the step-by-step procedure of obtaining insurance reimbursement for post rehab services.

By incorporating the points listed above into your plan, you will be have a profitable and successful medical exercise training and post rehab program. Should further information be needed on developing a profitable and successful post rehab program please visit www.postrehab.com http://www.postrehab.com.

Eating fat is bad. But no wait; it’s carbohydrates that are evil. One expert says one thing, and then another doctor says something else. Back and forth this goes. Maybe that new infomercial selling the latest miracle weight loss product is the way to go? Who knows? In the meantime, you’re confused and not losing any weight. Well, get ready for some possible answers and even a few more questions.

Studies show that not all people have the same response to diets. First, the results of a new study in the June 19th, 2010 edition of The Endocrine Society reports obese women with insulin resistance lose more weight after three months on a lower-carbohydrate diet than on a traditional low-fat diet with the same number of calories. The study’s lead author, Raymond Plodkowski, MD, Chief of Endocrinology, Nutrition and Metabolism at the University Of Nevada School Of Medicine, Reno wrote, “The typical diet that physicians recommend for weight loss is a low-fat diet.

According to the researchers of the study, for this group of women, the lower carbohydrate diet is more effective, at least in the short term. The study lasted 12 weeks and was funded by Jenny Craig. It found the insulin resistant women on the lowest-carb diet lost 3.4 pounds more than those on the low fat diet. Total calories for all groups were the same. The low-carbohydrate diet included 45% of its calories from carbohydrates, 35% from primary unsaturated fats, and 20% from protein. The low fat diet included 60% of its calories from carbohydrates, 20% from fat, and 20% from protein. Both diets included a minimum of 2 fruits and 3 vegetable servings a day. The use of prepared meals made the structured diets easier and more palatable for the dieter.

Insulin resistance is a condition where the body produces insulin but does not use it properly. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas to break down glucose in the blood so it can be used for energy. Glucose is a form of sugar and is the body’s primary source of energy. After your digestive system breaks food down into glucose, glucose is then transported to different parts of your body via the bloodstream. Glucose in the blood stream is called “blood glucose” or “blood sugar.” After you eat, blood glucose levels rise and your pancreas secretes insulin to allow cells to absorb and use the glucose.

When people are insulin resistant, they do not respond properly to insulin. In other words, even though the pancreas secretes insulin, it is not effective in getting the glucose from the blood into the cells. More insulin is needed so the pancreas works harder and secretes more. Eventually, the pancreas cannot keep up with the increased demand and glucose builds up in the blood. This is the beginning of diabetes. It is common for diabetics to have high levels of both glucose and insulin circulating in the bloodstream. Insulin resistance not only sets the stage for developing Type 2 Diabetes, it increases the odds of the number one killer in America: heart disease. According to the American Diabetes Association: “People with diabetes have a higher-than-average risk of having a heart attack or stroke. These strike people with diabetes more than twice as often as people without diabetes.”

So what causes insulin resistance? There seem to be several contributing factors. The first factor may be genetic. Some scientists think specific genes make certain people more susceptible to insulin resistance. But, genes aren’t everything. Weight and lack of physical activity also seem to play a major role. Then, there are also the types of food you eat. The more junk sugars (ice cream, candy bars, etc.) you eat, the more your little pancreas has to work to keep up with all the sugar that has been dumped into the bloodstream. Just like everything else, there is only so much work your pancreas can do. If the pace is too high for too long, it will basically burn out and quit. It is important to stop this process before it gets too far. Exercise, weight loss and proper diet can reverse many cases of insulin resistance and pre-diabetes. According to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, “The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) and other large studies have shown that people with pre-diabetes can often prevent or delay diabetes if they lose a modest amount of weight by cutting fat and calorie intake and increasing physical activity; for example, walking 30 minutes a day 5 days a week. Losing just 5 to 7 percent of body weight prevents or delays diabetes by nearly 60 percent. In the DPP, people aged 60 or older who made lifestyle changes lowered their chances of developing diabetes by 70 percent.”

With all of this information, the most important message to take away is this: Lifestyle has a major impact on your health. At New Century Spine Centers in San Diego, the spinal decompression chiropractors assist the patients in proper nutrition. Different people react to different foods and diets in different ways, and it is important to pay attention to what you eat and figure out what is best for you. But no matter what, regular exercise and staying away from junk food loaded with bad fats and sugar is a very good idea. Research may not have all the answers yet, but to our knowledge, there is no study that says sitting on the couch stuffing your face with candy bars and ice cream is good for your health.

Over my time traveling throughout North America teaching our Post Rehab Professional workshops, I have noticed the highly successful Post Rehab Professionals (PRP’s) always have eight habits that guarantee their success. We will discuss each of these 8 habits and explain the effect each has on your post rehab practice. Successful PRP’s are able to develop safe and effective post rehab programs for many different medical conditions, effectively establish great, long-term referral relationships among the medical community, and many receive insurance reimbursement for their services. If you begin to develop these habits, I promise you will also grow a profitable and successful post rehab practice.

PRPs define their scope of practice and role in a clear and concise statement in their brochures, marketing materials and presentations. Defining your scope of practice and clearly outlining your menu of services allows you to position yourself as the expert in the rehab spectrum, rather than relying on someone else who lacks a true understanding of your background and education. This could result in an inaccurate definition that will negatively impact the destiny of your practice. Providing a definition of post rehab fitness will further reinforce your scope of practice and prevent any misunderstanding or misconceptions regarding your role as a PRP.

PRP’s speak at local medical clinics, professional organizations or local support groups to educate these groups about the services he or she offers. These presentations include information on the PRP’s scope of service, the role of the PRP in the rehab exercise arena, the types of individuals PRP’s work with as well as the benefits of post rehab programming. A simple demonstration of a few easy to perform exercises is usually included in the presentation. This exercise demonstration gives the PRP a chance to show the ease and simplicity of many of their exercises. Having this experience and trying out the exercise can often turn members of the audience into clients. The goal of every successful PRP’s is to make at least one presentation per month to a group.

PRP’s document and share their findings of the fitness assessments they perform and client progress to the appropriate medical professional or insurance carrier. This ability to accurately report any issues and progress is a necessary skill each PRP should develop. If you are not able to inform the appropriate individuals about your findings and progress in a clear concise manner this could result in the loss of future referrals as well as being turned down for any insurance reimbursement. Appropriate post rehab forms and reporting guidelines are available to buy at www.postrehab.com and www.postrehabtoday.com.

The best post rehab professionals make it a habit to follow-up via phone for all inquiries received (either written or verbal) with medical professionals and insurance carriers. They make a point to complete these phone calls within 72 hours, however, the sooner the better. This confirms the medical professional or insurance carrier received your documentation and determines if they require more detailed information. Written communication can often lack the subtle details a medical professional or insurance carrier may need when making a decision on the client’s care and management. A timely follow-up call enhances PRP’s professional image and credibility.

Successful PRP’s assess and re-assess the post rehab client to establish a baseline for the program and to determine the client’s progress. The PRP must determine the appropriate assessment procedures to use to gain a clear understanding of the client’s ROM/flexibility, strength, endurance, balance and functional capacity. The assessment process should give the PRP a clear understanding of the client’s ability without precipitating an exacerbation of the client’s symptoms.

The post rehab professional should help the client move forward to reach the goals established at the outset of the program. The post rehab professional should move the client forward without triggering an exacerbation of the client’s condition. The ability to do this requires a combination of understanding the client’s condition, knowledge of the appropriate progression guidelines and the ability to perform appropriate a post rehab assessment techniques.

The PRP must motivate, encourage and support the post rehab client to achieve the program goals. Knowing when and how to motivate the client without setting up the client for failure is a trait every PRP must develop. Pain and discomfort may cause the post rehab client to become discouraged and depressed. Expertise in exercise prescription alone is not the key to post rehab success. The post rehab client, in most situations, needs more encouragement, support than the traditional fitness client.

PRPs educate their clients so they can better improve their own conditions. Having an educated client means they have a much better chance of success than the client with who does not understand their own condition. PRPs should also actively educate themselves and their staff members. Successful PRPs regularly attend workshops and seminars, and also conduct their own research on conditions and complications they see among their clients. PRPs use this new knowledge when enhancing their practice. Successful PRPs believe in continuous learning.

Post rehab is a swiftly growing fitness idea. The post rehab professional who can practice the eight habits outlined above will see more medical and personal referrals, an increased reputation resulting in increased practice revenue. Having good habits promote great success.

A professional massage is a rejuvenating experience where you feel relaxed and invigorated at the same time. It is so beneficial for diabetics that it should be considered compulsory for them. Currently diabetics suffer a lot, as they have no cure, though insulin, exercise, and a controlled diet help to keep their symptoms under check. However complimentary and alternative medicines do have certain remedies which go a long way in helping diabetics resume normal life and ease their problems a lot. These techniques are also often preferable as they have lesser side effects. One of these techniques is robotic massage chair therapy. It can reduce a lot of the complications that diabetics face and plays an important role in the treatment of the disease.

Massage increases blood circulation and stimulates blood flow around vital organs which can be used to help diabetics relieve pain. Effective massages increase blood circulation which helps to decrease diabetes associated with complications and complaints and proves to be extremely beneficial for those with neuropathy.

Massage chair therapy is administered through the use of a massage chair. Massage chair techniques are suited to specific kinds of complaints and general well being because it can target specific areas of the body for best overall effectiveness. As you choose massage therapy always seek professional guidance as to what would be most beneficial for the best desired mode of relaxation.

A massage administered by a robotic massage chair can relax your body completely and help to manage blood sugar levels and blood pressure levels by increasing blood circulation and maintaining it. This is extremely beneficial for diabetics. While the masseuse will pass over certain parts of your body, you will appreciate the pressure over certain points which are responsible for holding back toxins in your body. Gentle massage will help to clear up the toxins from these areas.

Massage helps built-up tension become relaxed giving you the much needed relief. There are a lot of pressure points on the feet and different parts of the body where massage can give you relaxed muscles instantly.

The great thing about a massage chair session is that you will not be required to take off all your clothes for the massage. You might just want to remove your shoes. For a regular massage session, you will more than likely be required to remove your clothing and shoes and keep only a towel, so don’t be shy. This is essential so as to not have any uncomfortable underwear or clothes constricting your muscles. Usually incense is burned as well to have a relaxing aroma in the small darkened room where it will take place. Massages are usually charged by the hour and the rate will depend on where you live. There are various types of massages which you can decide on after talking it over with your masseuse. Usually light natural oils are used for lubrication.

Don’t miss out on an opportunity for a massage, particularly from a robotic massage chair recliner, as it can be quite relaxing and beneficial for your health. The great benefit of the massage chair recliner is that you can get massaged as many times a day and for as long as you want all day long. You might enjoy it and even get relaxed to such an extent that you may fall asleep on the massage chair itself.
