You might have heard someone say that they’ve a bulging disc or herniated disc. To better understand what these are, it assists to know just a little about the spine anatomy. The vertebrae or bones that form the spine have spongy cushions among them referred to as discs. These act as shock absorbers in the spine and permit correct movement the bones of the spine. When these discs are injured, they can bulge out of their standard position or even break open.

Sciatica is the sensation of pain, tingling, or numbness in the buttocks and/or legs produced by an irritation of the sciatic nerve. Multiple nerve roots extend from the spinal cord in the lower lumbar spine and join with the sacral plexus to form the sciatic nerve, which branches into the peroneal and tibial nerves as it descends into the knees and feet. The primary causes of sciatica are herniated or bulging discs, subluxations (when one or more bones are out of alignment), spinal stenosis, facet syndrome, or cancer. All or one of these conditions can induce pressure on the spinal nerve roots that in turn can cause leg pain.
