<p>What we are referring to is the belief that taking antioxidants is good for you. Many believe they can prevent such diseases as heart, Parkinson&#8217;s and Alzheimer&#8217;s disease. A study published in the August 10th issue of Cell sheds new light on this claim. It says that too much of a certain antioxidant may even cause heart disease in the long run.</p>
<p>Understanding how antioxidants are thought to work is very important. Heart, Alzheimer&#8217;s, Parkinson&#8217;s, and other deadly diseases are associated with oxidative stress, in which &#8220;free radical&#8221; molecules are produced in reaction to oxygen intake. Free radicals travel through the body, triggering chemical reactions that damage proteins causing them to form aggregates. It is believed that antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E offer health-promoting benefits by protecting against damaging free radicals that damage the body. That&#8217;s why many people take antioxidants to prevent heart and other protein-aggregate diseases in many.</p>
<p>In a study on laboratory mice, University of Utah researchers (Ivor J. Benjamin, M.D. and Christi T. Smith Chair of Cardiovascular Research, division chief of cardiology at the Utah School of Medicine) found that an overload of natural antioxidants could actually lead to heart failure.</p>
<p>Reductive stress is a condition caused by excessive levels of reduced glutathione, which is one of your body&#8217;s most powerful antioxidants. When your cells work properly, they produce just the right amount of reduced glutathione, which is healthy for your body. However, in some people, a mutated gene can disrupt the fine balance, causing the cells to produce too much.</p>
<p>In the study of laboratory mice with failing hearts caused by mutant alpha B-Crystallin, researchers found increased activity of the biochemical pathway leading to high levels of reduced glutathione in the animals. Glutathione is regulated at multiple steps principally by the G6PD enzyme. To establish the connection between reduced glutathione and heart failure, Benjamin mated mutant alpha B-Crystallin mice that carried too much G6PD with mice that had far lower levels.</p>
<p>The resulting offspring had normal levels of reduced glutathione and did not develop heart failure. The researchers found that by lowering the level of reduced glutathione in mice with failing hearts, they were able to increase their rate of survival dramatically. &#8220;Lowering the level of reduced glutathione dramatically changed the survival of these mice,&#8221; Benjamin said. &#8220;Basically, we prevented them from getting heart failure.&#8221; Benjamin also added that although many people take antioxidants to prevent heart and other protein-aggregate diseases, there actually is scant evidence to prove they work. And that, &#8220;This is a case of too much of a good thing.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;This field of medicine has not appreciated reductive stress and its influence on disease,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This is about balance needed in the environment of our cells, and it can have profound consequences on the treatments of heart disease and other serious disorders.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Too Much Of A Good Thing?&#8221; This is a concept that is misunderstood by most of the population&#8230; and probably leads to many health problems. What concept? 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you are like most people, you probably think the sun causes cancer.  Our chiropractic patients in San Diego regularly bring up this issue. And why shouldn&#8217;t you?  Some news coverage has demonized the sun as dangerous. It has sent many running from it like Vampires at dawn.  And as a chiropractor in San Diego, I feel like I need to set the records straight.</p>
<p>The truth is that overexposure to the sun can cause problems.  What you probably don&#8217;t know &#8211; underexposure can be dangerous to your health. Here&#8217;s why: A new study looking at the relationship between vitamin D serum levels and the risk of colon and breast cancer across the globe has estimated the number of cases of cancer that could be prevented each year if vitamin D3 levels met the target proposed by researchers.</p>
<p>Cedric F. Garland, a cancer prevention specialist at the Moores Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) estimated that 250,000 cases of colorectal cancer and 350,000 cases of breast cancer could be prevented worldwide by increasing intake of vitamin D. In particular, they were referring to vitamin D3. This is particular in countries north of the equator. Vitamin D3 is available through diet, supplements and exposure of the skin to direct sunlight.</p>
<p>The research paper which looks at the dose-response relationship between vitamin D and cancer will be published in the August edition of the journal of Nutrition Reviews. It stated that for the first time, we are saying that 600,000 cases of breast and colorectal cancer may possibly be prevented each year worldwide, including nearly 150,000 in the United States alone,&#8221; said study co-author Garland. </p>
<p>The study combined data from surveys of serum vitamin D levels during winter from 15 countries. It is the first such study to look at satellite measurements of sunshine and cloud cover in countries where actual blood serum levels of vitamin D3 had also been determined. The data was then applied to 177 countries to estimate the average serum level of a vitamin D metabolite of people living there.</p>
<p>The research data revealed a conflicting association of serum vitamin D with danger of colorectal and breast cancer. The protective effect began at levels ranging from 24 to 32 nanograms per milliliter of 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration in the serum. The 25-hydroxyvitamin D level is the major indicator of vitamin D level status. The late winter average 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the U.S. is about 15-18 ng/ml. The researchers uphold that increasing vitamin D levels in populations, chiefly those in northern climates, has the probability to both prevent and possibly serve as an adjunct to existing treatments for cancer. These research studies had some very important findings for any reader to consider.</p>
<p>It was stated that the suitable dose of vitamin D in order to reach this level could be very small in a lifeguard in Southern California. I can&#8217;t help it &#8211; it&#8217;s in my genes. That&#8217;s been the surrender slogan for many overweight and obese individuals for years. And who could blame them? Even many doctors and researchers believed your ability to lose weight &#8211; or pack on pounds &#8211; was a function of your genetic make-up.</p>
<p>If you were dealt a bad genetic hand, your fate was to be fat and overweight. New information shows that this might not be the case. Be very careful who you befriend as it may cause you to become overweight. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that the obesity epidemic could spread like a virus through social networks. When a person becomes overweight, his friends and siblings are likely to gain weight as well in the long run.</p>
<p>The researchers evaluated a network of over twelve thousand people who underwent repeated measurements over a period of over thirty years. They found that when a person becomes obese, the chances that a friend will become obese increase by about fifty seven percent. Siblings of obese people have a forty percent increased risk of obesity, and their spouse&#8217;s risk increased by thirty seven percent overall.</p>
<p>On average, having an obese friend made a person gain 17 pounds, which put many people over the body mass index (BMI) measure for obesity. Female friendships did not seem to be impacted by obesity. But the chances that a man might gain weight from having a fat pal doubled for so-called mutual friends &#8212; friends who both listed each other as buddies.</p>
<p>Dr. Nicholas Christakis, the study&#8217;s lead author stated that there is an important implication here for a broadening perspective on treatment for obesity. Attitudes are changing about what constitutes an acceptable body size in both men and women. &#8220;We don&#8217;t think that this is the only cause of obesity. This is adding one additional factor or explanation.&#8221;</p>
<p>One big question raised by the study was, &#8220;why didn&#8217;t having obese friends affect the women&#8217;s weight?&#8221; &#8220;There is a strong social bias for women towards thinness,&#8221; said Dr. Robert Kushner, President of the American Board of Nutrition Physician Specialists. &#8220;Social norms may trump social networks here. Guys don&#8217;t have the same social pressure. Men may be more influenced by their friends.&#8221;</p>
<p>Other diet experts agree that the inner workings of male friendships may have a lot to do with obesity. &#8220;Current social stigma against obesity is greater among women than men. Women jointly discuss weight and support each other in dieting and exercising,&#8221; said Jeffery Sobal, a Professor of Nutritional Science at Cornell University. &#8220;Men may engage in joint activities that increase weight, such as consuming more calories or spending time in sedentary activities.&#8221;</p>
<p>And here&#8217;s something interesting reported by researcher James Fowler of Harvard University and Nicholas Christakis of the University of California in the city of San Diego. They say it is plausible that areas of the brain that correspond to actions such as eating food may be stimulated if these actions are observed by others.</p>
<p>They say that obesity and being overweight is socially contagious. he researchers found that to be true even if your loved ones live hundreds of miles away. Social ties seem to play a surprisingly strong role, even more than genes are known to do. &#8220;We were stunned to find that friends who are hundreds of miles away have just as much impact on a person&#8217;s weight status as friends who are right next door,&#8221; said Dr Fowler.</p>
<p>Despite their findings, the researchers said people should not sever their relationships. &#8220;There is a ton of research that suggests that having more friends makes you healthier,&#8221; Fowler said. &#8220;So the last thing that you want to do is get rid of any of your friends.&#8221; Clearly, this study shows the importance of behavior in weight gain overshadowing genetic make-up. This research was done to determine whether a faulty gene was involved that may have caused them to become obese. Researchers were looking specifically at the gene in charge of the leptin receptor. Leptin is a hormone in the body that controls appetite and can influence how much we feel like eating. It has been formerly implicated in animal obesity studies.</p>
<p>Scientists studied the obese participants to see whether this so-called obesity gene was disturbed in any which way. They discovered that only 3 percent of people had an abnormal leptin gene &#8212; indicating that leptin is probably not a factor for most obese and overweight people. And scientists in New Zealand are dispelling the widespread myth that obesity is caused by &#8220;bad genes.&#8221;</p>
<p>In what is referred to as a burst through discovery, scientists from Auckland University&#8217;s Liggins Institute have found that genetic pre-disposition to fatness can be reversed through good quality nutrition in early childhood. Their studies shows that when a mother is undernourished, her child&#8217;s body is pre-set to cope with a life of scarcity-the energy-dense fast food diet of the Western world results in kids who are likely to become fat and obese. This is from poor diet and nutrition.</p>
<p>In laboratory tests, newborn offspring from both well-fed and undernourished rats were given leptin, a hormone that signals to the body when it has eaten enough. When they became adults, the long-term effects were measured by looking at genes that regulate metabolism in the liver. Rats from well-fed mothers reacted to leptin in the opposite way to those from undernourished mothers.</p>
<p>The scientists urge mothers to eat a more balanced diet. This includes the right amounts of protein and vitamins during the pregnancy period. However, if the fetus is malnourished in the womb, the long-term effects can still be corrected through high-quality nutrition.</p>
<p>So what&#8217;s the final word on all this? Is it our genes that make us easily gain weight which leads to becoming overweight or even obese or is it our behavior that shapes (and sculpts) our bodies? The most likely correct answer is: BOTH. You are born with a set of genes you cannot change. Some people can eat and eat and never gain a pound. Others can&#8217;t. But as the recent research is showing &#8211; you have much more control over the final outcome than most people are willing to take credit for. No matter your genetic make-up, you can choose to eat properly and exercise.</p>

<p>Edema in acute stages is defined as heart failure to one side, yet the problem extends to cause pain in the back. What occurs is when the heart is interrupted; it channels the fluids to tubes, vessels, ducts, and passageways that extend to the lungs.</p>
<p>Causes of edema: Edema may arise from inhaling smoke, MI, CHF, Myocarditis, excessive I.V. intakes of fluid, Valvular disease, overdose of drugs, such as morphine, barbiturates, and heroin. Acute edema arises from ARDS (Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome) and Atherosclerosis.</p>
<p>The lack of heart pumping can cause stress to the chest, which when the chest is scarred it affects the spines structure and mobility. Overarching the back is where back pain starts, since the chest is restricted from scarring and/or edema.</p>
<p>Experts will often use X-rays, ABG tests, ECG, and monitor Homodynamic to discover edema. Of course, edema can lead to major problems, such as Hypernatremia, Digoxin Toxicity, Hypokalemia, Excessive Fluid, and Pulmonary Blockage of the arteries, (Embolism), which starts blood clotting and affects blood circulation. Hypokalemia will decrease potassium intake that is required by blood. What happens is the decrease of potassium to the blood causes excessive excretion of fluids that lead to the muscles, which cause weakness. The back pain is not necessary the issue at this stage, since the heart is the starting point, which could lead to cardiac arrest.</p>
<p>When acute edema is present, experts will often restrict fluid intake, while administering I.V. fluids to substitute. Oxygen and meds are prescribed. Often the doctor will request that the patient remain consistent in a high position, such as &#8220;Fowler&#8217;s.&#8221;</p>
<p>Symptoms: Edema may present fatigue, coughing, JVD, Hypophysis, murmurs, Orthopnea, one-side heart failure (Right often), low output of cardiac, exerted Dyspnea, and so on. The condition can cause various other symptoms to emerge as well.</p>
<p>Experts will request that the patient limit fluid intake, and join in oxygen therapy. Since edema causes excessive fluid buildup, isometric exercises, and bed, rest is required. Isometric workouts is the process of pushing muscles next to a sturdy surface, whereas the muscles are put under tension, yet restricted from contractions. The exercises are recommended in a variety of medical treatments when back pain is involved.</p>
<p>Edema also affects the joints, cartilages, muscles etc, which can cause tenderness, ulcers of the legs, changes of stasis, and so forth. Edema affects the veins found in the neck as well, which is one of the leading starts of back pain. To avoid traveling into the heart cavity and discussing heart conditions, I will sum up edema and the causes of back pain.</p>
<p>As I mentioned earlier, back pain starts with edema since when the heart is not pumping blood it affects the connective tissues, ligaments, tendons, muscles, cells, joints, etc. As you can see, when the skeleton elements are targeted pain will occur from swelling and inflammation. The cause of back pain then starts with excessive fluid buildup emerging from acute edema and/or peripheral edema conditions.</p>

This ray usually does not reach our planet&#8217;s surface and this is good because it is believed only brief exposure to UVC rays is fatal to our body. Next is ultraviolet B radiation. This is also known as UVB rays. These have long been considered the tanning rays of the sun. They are strongest during the summer months when the Earth&#8217;s orbit is closest to the Sun. UVB rays are what produce a sun tan to our skin.</p>
<p>For many years, sunblocks and sunscreens only attempted to block UVB because science was unaware of the effects of UVA rays (the third type of sun ray) on the body. UVA was believed to be the safe ray in the 1980s, which spawned the growth and popularity of the artificial sun bed industry &#8211; some dermatologists even backed this artificial tanning! But, science now believes UVA rays actually do more damage than UVB rays! UVA rays are not dependant on how far the Earth is from the Sun &#8211; so the effects are the same all year round. What&#8217;s more, UVA penetrates light clothing and car windshields&#8230; even many hats.  Over-exposure to the sun has been linked to premature aging and even deadly skin cancer.</p>
<p>This brings us to the second so called fact which is limit contact to the harmful rays of the sun by using high SPF sunscreens and sunblocks. For years, the sunblock industry has been thriving with the guarantee their products protect you from the sun&#8217;s aging and cancerous rays. But, research now says these &#8220;truths&#8221; may not be so &#8220;true.&#8221; For example, there is no agreement whether sunscreens prevent skin cancer. According to the Environmental Working Groups&#8217; (ewg.org) finding, &#8220;The Food and Drug Administration&#8217;s 2007 draft sunscreen wellbeing regulations say: FDA is not aware of data representative that sunscreen use alone helps prevent skin cancer.&#8221; (FDA 2007). The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) agrees. The IARC recommends clothing, hats and shade as main barriers to UV radiation and writes &#8220;sunscreens should not be the primary choice for skin cancer prevention and should not be used as the sole agent for protection against the sun&#8221; (IARC 2001a). Even poorer, there is proof emerging that sunscreen may actually amplify the risk of skin cancer!</p>
<p>Researchers conjecture the reason or causes may be lack of UVA protection by most sunscreen for over thirty years, inappropriate usage, staying in the sun longer with sunscreens and some of the ingredients. One large problem is the SPF (sun protection factor) myth. In 2007, the FDA published draft regulations that would ban manufacturers from labeling sunscreens over 50 SPF. The FDA stated that anything over 50 SPF was &#8220;inherently misleading.&#8221; Even an SPF of 50 can be ambiguous because of the way most people use sunscreen.</p>
<p>A person using one-fourth the amount of sunscreen with an SPF of 30 only actually gets an SPF of 2.3. The same person using a sunscreen with SPF 100 ends up with only SPF 3.2. In the real world, tests show people apply only one-half to one fifth of the amount used when testing the sunscreen. </p>
<p>Then, there are the potential problems with the ingredients found in sunscreens. For example, oxybenzone, a common ingredient, is a known hormone disruptor. Retinyl palmitate (a form of Vitamin A also commonly used in sunscreens) may increase the risk of skin cancer. According to Environmental Working Groups, &#8220;The publicly available data from FDA&#8217;s new study suggest that when used in sun-exposed skin care products, retinyl palmitate and related chemicals may increase skin damage and elevate skin cancer risk instead of protecting the skin.&#8221;</p>
<p>Also, according to Environmental Working Groups, 41% of all sunscreens contain retinyl palmitate. All of this may be surprising but what&#8217;s even more shocking is that the FDA first issued draft sunscreen regulations in 1978 and last updated the draft in 2007. The regulations are still not final, despite multiple announcements of impending completion. Until the agency formally issues its rules, companies are not required to verify their sunscreens work, including testing for SPF levels, checking waterproof claims or providing UVA protection. Nearly one in eight sunscreens does not block UVA rays. Many carry the seal of &#8220;The Skin Cancer Foundation.&#8221; According to the Environmental Working Groups, &#8220;The Skin Cancer Foundation (SCF) lends its logo to hundreds of sun protection products. SCF approval is easy, just document that your product has an SPF of at least 15 and provide results of basic tests (for SPF, skin reactions and water and sweat resistance, if such claims are made).</p>
<p>This can all be confusing. If you are, then you are not alone. Here&#8217;s something that will make the most of the confusion Disappear. Since sunscreens are probably not as safe as once thought, the best thing to do is stay out of the sun during its peak hours (10:00am &#8211; 2:00pm) and whenever possible, wear protective clothing instead of chemicals. Don&#8217;t forget, some sun is absolutely necessary for Vitamin D production and proper health. The amount of sun you should get depends on your skin type but you should NEVER burn. Just following some of these simple steps will help avoid damage.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In my chiropractic office in San Diego, we see patients with back pain and also have patients who ask about nutrition for proper heart health. On May 15th, 2007, the Commonwealth Fund issued a report entitled, &#8220;Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: An International Update on the Comparative Performance of American Health Care.&#8221;</p>
<p>The results were not good when it comes to American healthcare. In fact, here&#8217;s what the first sentence of the report had to say in this regard: &#8220;Despite having the most costly health system in the world, the United States consistently underperforms on most dimensions of performance, relative to other countries. Are you shocked by this report?  You shouldn&#8217;t be at all.  Why is this?  This is because this is nothing new.</p>
<p>According to the report it stated that among the six nations studied &#8211; Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States-the U.S. ranks last. This also occurred in the 2006 and 2004 editions of Mirror. The most troubling news is that the United States fails to achieve better health outcomes than the other countries, and as shown in the earlier editions, the United States is last on dimensions of access, patient safety, efficiency, and equity. It was right at the bottom. The 2007 edition includes data from the 6 countries and incorporates patients&#8217; and physicians&#8217; survey results on care experiences and ratings on various dimensions of care.</p>
<p>In general, Germany and the UK topped the list, with Canada and the United States raising up the rear.
