A spinal intervertebral disc is a small, gelatinous substance contained inside the vertebrae of the spinal cord. The spinal column itself is a hard bone, but it has a soft jelly-like substance inside it to cushion each vertebrae during movement. When the herniated disc ruptures or bulges from its proper place, it may press on nearby nerves.

Disc herniation or herniated disc is typically the analysis of most physicians when patients encounter back and leg pain, weakness in the lower extremities, or decline of control of bowel and bladder.
