In medicine and some alternative medicine, I’m sure you’ve heard of first do no harm. As a chiropractor at New Century Spine Centers in San Diego, that’s one of the most basic and important concepts that you hear of in the practice of medicine. But in this day and age, profit seems to have taken that age-old motto’s place. This even applies when it comes to our children. The Associated Press reported that “Very young children simply should not take some commonly used cold and cough medicine federal health officials say in recommending that the “consult your physician” advice to parents on the labels be dropped. The preliminary recommendation, from Food and Drug Administration safety officials, would apply to decongestant use in children under 2, and antihistamines in those younger than 6, according to agency documents.

The more than 350 pages of documents are part of a broad and ongoing FDA examination of whether the roughly 800 medicines, many popular and widely used, are safe and effective in treating children’s colds and coughs.” The FDA review came in response to a petition filed by Baltimore city officials who say many of the over-the-counter cold and cough medicines can harm toddlers and pre-schoolers. According to the Associated Press article: “Those officials, joined by the American Academy of Pediatrics, cite evidence that suggests the drugs are not only risky but also don’t work in the very young.

“The basic question is why a product should be so relentlessly marketed when it’s not safe or effective?” said Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, Baltimore’s health commissioner. “It does not make sense, in the absence of information, to say ‘consult a physician,’ because they do not have superhuman powers. They cannot make a product safe or effective.” Here’s something interesting: The Consumer Healthcare Products Association (which represents the makers of over-the-counter medicines) supports not using these cold and cough medicines in children under the age of two. The association’s president, Linda Suydam, said they recommend adding a warning that the drugs not be used to sedate young children.

Check out what Dr. William Campbell Douglass II, M.D. has to say about the issue: “I grumble about the incompetence of today’s parents a lot. It’s no secret that I think new-fangled ‘diseases’ such as ADD and ADHD are nothing more than kids being kids – and parents NOT being parents. I shudder to think that the future of this great nation is going to be largely in the hands of children who were diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder and have been dependent on drugs nearly from infancy. This is remarkable. It’s a sad state when labels stating that disclaimer has to be added and is not common sense to most parents. But in defense, society has been bombarded with brilliant marketing campaigns that make these drugs sound safe and effective. And even beyond that – flat out miracles.

That is equally deserving of ridicule, in my eyes – is the absurd action of sedating children with OTC cold and allergy drugs. It’s a whole new level of irresponsibility and selfishness on the part of parents, caregivers, and anyone else who thinks children should come with an on/off switch. “Still, that hasn’t stopped a portion of the population from drugging (yes, drugging – let’s call a spade a spade) children with allergy or cold medicines whenever it was convenient. But if the ethical concerns weren’t strong enough to make these people think twice, maybe the safety concerns will.

“The sedation issue has brought about the long overdue examination of certain cough and cold medicines for children THAT WERE NEVER ADEQUATELY TESTED in children. It’s a dirty little secret, but now pediatricians and health officials are finally bringing it to light. “Brand names that have become the standard treatment for children – drugs such as Toddler’s Dimetapp, Triaminic Infant, and Little Colds – were placed on the market before the FDA tightened its pre-market testing standards. The main compound in Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is under inspection for the same reasons.

“This will likely come as a shock to most parents. After all, the drug companies are allowed to market the cough medicines for children – even though no studies have been done showing that they’re safe OR effective!” This post is not endorsing or condemning the statement made by Dr. Douglass. What it does endorse is open discussion on the subject, and Dr. Douglass’ right to his opinion. You must admit – it is something to think about. An FDA review of side-effect records filed with the agency between 1969 and September 2006 found 54 reports of deaths in children associated with decongestant medicines made with pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine or ephedrine. It also found 69 reports of deaths associated with antihistamine medicines containing diphenhydramine, brompheniramine or chlorpheniramine.

Most of the deaths were children younger than 2. The CDC found that in 2004 and 2005, over 1,500 children less than 2 years old had to be taken to the hospital after taking a common cough and cold medicine. Three of them died. And in Maryland alone (where the petition to review the safety and efficacy of cough and cold medicines originated), 900 children under 4 years old overdosed on these medications in 2004, and in the last 5 years such drugs have been linked to 4 deaths. Also on September 28th, the FDA gave drug companies until Oct. 31 to stop making and selling any unapproved prescription medicines labeled for use by children younger than 6 that contain the painkiller and cough suppressant hydrocodone.

Visit New Century Spine Centers in San Diego or visit their website at www.BackCareTreatment.com to get more information. Manufacturers of any other unapproved hydrocodone medicines, beyond those intended for young children, must stop making them by Dec. 31 and cease shipping them by March 31, 2008, the FDA said. It said the order applies to most of the hydrocodone formulations sold as cough medicines. And according to Dr. Douglass, “Manufacturers claim that the drugs are safe when they’re used on the proper age group (6 years old and up) and with the proper dosage.” But do they even know what constitutes proper dosage? According to Dr. Charles Gangley, the Director of the FDA’s Office of Nonprescription Drug Products, most dosages listed on these labels are no more than EDUCATED GUESSES. He said, “We have no data on these agents of what’s a safe and effective dose in children.” My advice: We’re talking about children here, infants and toddlers. So first things first: Let’s worry about SAFETY first and get to effective from there.

This article is aimed particularly at osteopaths which are actively grappling with children’s physical improvement through their phases of growth and maturation. The particular emphasis of this paper is placed on childhood spinal development and stability, for it’s only by trying to comprehend certain developmental milestones and by observing the children in our care that we can begin to be in a placement to make appropriate, informed clinical judgements and decisions.Research studies across Europe, the UK and America have discovered a direct correlation between the mechanisms responsible for establishing a child’s physical stability and understanding abilities. The studies have been carried out on three groups of reflexes, which support the child via its first 3 many years of existence. These reflexes supply the initial foundation of stability and coordination, as they are practiced, transformed and integrated within the motor cortex, the kid will demonstrate various motor skill milestones e.g. understanding how you can sit, roll more than, crawl, creep on hands and knees, stand and walk.

The 3 groups of reflexes are: Intra-uterine reflexes which develop at 5-7 weeks post conception that are initiated from the brainstem level, with a characteristic withdrawal response or slight straightening of the foetus to stimuli applied to the feet, hands or lips as nicely as noxious stimuli.Primitive reflexes are developed by full term (40 weeks) and are inhibited or modified in between 6-12 months post natal which are also mediated by the brain stem.

Postural reflexes emerge after birth and gradually take more than the functioning of the primitive reflexes over the course of the first 3 many years of life and then remain for life.

Osteopathically the primitive and postural reflexes are of specific interest to us as they have a tonic effect about the body’s muscular system and are instrumental in the improvement from the spinal arches.

There are many Primitive/Postural Reflexes nevertheless an understanding and recognition from the ones listed below is essential, as retention of these reflexes can hinder treatment progression. This will then need a particular assessment of neuro-developmental delay with appropriate developmental exercises and remediation techniques prescribed. Moro Reflex: – is inhibited and modified at around 4 months. Triggers for this reflex are sudden unexpected changes of placement, particularly head assistance as well as a reaction to sudden change of vision/ auditory/ tactile and olfactory stimuli.

This reflex assists in the very first breath, activates the fight and flight response and gradually as higher cortical manage requires over this reflex it matures into the startle response. The Moro reflex action to any of the above stimuli is really a rapid extension or straightening of the spine, arms and legs. It’s a distress reaction that may adversely affect the curve formation of the spine and the flexion / extension muscle group action when the reflex persists beyond its normal period of activity (4 months).

Asymmetrical tonic neck reflex (ATNR):- should be inhibited at approximately 6 months. The function of this reflex is to assist the babies exit through the birth canal and the improvement of cross pattern movements and early hand eye coordination. Osteopathically the ATNR competence is important for that improvement from the cross tension neruo-muscular mechanism from the body, i.e. correlation in between right upper extremity and left lower extremity and vice versa.

The typical characteristic of the ATNR is seen when the baby rotates the head to one side and there’s a corresponding straightening of the arm and leg about the part the head is turned, and flexion from the arm and leg on the opposite side.If this reflex is not inhibited through the cerebral cortex within the very first year of existence, bilateral integration and coordination of movement and postural balance is going to be adversely affected in a variety of ways.

The Symmetrical tonic neck reflex (STNR):- Ought to be inhibited in between 9-11 months, the function of this reflex is to align the pelvis and occiput via the extensor spinal muscles in preparation for the upright stance. This is created by causing the upper and reduce halves of the body to perform opposite movements. When a baby moves its head up, the arms straighten and legs bend, if the head moves down, the arms bend and legs straighten. This sequence of reflex movements is the preparation for the integrated movement of crawling and eventually standing and walking. Retention of this reflex affects upper and reduce entire body integration, coordination of movement and control of postural balance.

The Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex (TLR):- takes up to 3 many years to be fully inhibited through the cerebral cortex. This reflex offers the basis for head control and postural stability. It helps to straighten the entire body from the flexed foetal position by facilitating contraction and extension of major muscle groups, this really is especially essential in the development of the spinal curves.

It’s usually recognised when the baby is held supported on its back if the head is lowered below the level of the spine – the baby’s arms and legs will straighten and if the head is raised above the level from the spine – the arms, legs and entire body flex.

Spinal Galant Reflex (SGR):- Requires 9 months to be inhibited. Its main purpose is to assist within the birth process. It is recognised by stimulation of the skin on either side of the lumbar spine causing flexion of the hip and side-bending of the lumbar spine to that side.Retention of the reflex can cause exaggerated external hip rotation on walking, hypersensitivity of the lumbar erector spinae and scoliosis.

The evolution of our understanding of the romantic relationship in between cervical manipulation and vertebral artery dissection – situation reviews, surveys, biomechanical research, situation reviews The awareness of a temporal romantic relationship between cervical CMT and VADS began with a sequence of case reviews published over a period of a number of many years [10-22]. In a number of these studies, the treating practitioner was incorrectly identified as a chiropractor [23]. These studies reported on cases of patients who developed VADS some time after receiving CMT. Usually in these reports the CMT was described as the cause from the dissection. Additionally to CMT a quantity of reports attributed the cause of VADS episodes to some number of other mechanical events which preceded the VADS episode [24].

Later came a series of retrospective surveys. The first of these was a survey of the 367 members from the Swiss Society for Manual Medicine who had been asked to recall more than the course of their career (minimum 2 many years, maximum 33 years, mean 8.1 many years) how many CMTs they had provided and how many issues had occurred following CMT [25]. They believed the pace of “slight neurological complications” to be 1:40,000 and the rate of “important complication” to be 1:400,000. Next was a survey of California neurologists who had been members of the American Academy of Neurology [2]. In this study, recipients of the survey were asked to recall more than the previous two years how many “neurologic complications subsequent chiropractic adjustment”, including radiculopathy, myelopathy and VADS, they had encountered. The authors noted a 37% response rate. Twenty-one percent reported a minimum of 1 situation of stroke. This was followed by a 10-year retrospective survey of chiropractors [26] in which the then-226 members from the Danish Chiropractors Association had been surveyed (response pace 54%) in an effort to determine the incidence of “cerebrovascular incidents” between 1978-1988. From these information they believed an incidence of 1 situation per 362 chiropractor years and 1 case per one.three million cervical treatment sessions.

Later, a biomechanical analyze was performed by Symons, et al [27]. They used five unembalmed cadavers and exposed their cervical spines to movements comparable to those that occur throughout clinical examination of range of motion as nicely as high-velocity, low amplitude CMT using a combined lateral flexion-rotation maneuver. This CMT was utilized separately to the upper, middle and lower cervical spine. They measured the strain on the vertebral artery during these maneuvers. The arteries had been then harvested and stretched to mechanical failure. They discovered that throughout ROM testing the strain to the vertebral artery was one.2% to 12.5% greater than that at sleep (the quantity of stress varied according towards the direction of movement applied). Throughout CMT the average strain was 6.2% greater than that at rest. Finally, they discovered that mechanical failure did not occur until average strains of 139%-162% greater than that at sleep. The authors concluded that the stress utilized towards the vertebral artery throughout CMT was unlikely to tear or otherwise mechanically disrupt a regular vertebral artery [27]. Limitations of this analyze had been pointed out in two subsequent letters towards the editor [28,29], such as that truth that this analyze assessed gross failure of the artery but not other feasible mechanisms by which CMT may cause vertebral artery dissection.

Other notable studies were published as nicely. Haldeman, et al [30] retrospectively reviewed 23 cases of VADS that occurred subsequent CMT, utilizing data from a Canadian chiropractic malpractice insurance carrier more than a 10-year time period. From these instances they estimated the quantity of neurologists and chiropractors who were directly involved in each case. They calculated that one in 48 chiropractors was exposed to such instances, in comparison to one in two neurologists. They concluded that this selection or referral bias most likely explained why neurologists often perceive VADS following CMT to become far much more typical than do chiropractors. Haldeman, et al [31] carried out a retrospective review of 64 cases of VADS temporally related to CMT. They discovered no factors within the history or examination that would assist the physician in identifying the individual at danger of VADS after CMT. These authors concluded “Cerebrovascular accidents after manipulation appear to become unpredictable and ought to be considered an inherent, idiosyncratic, and rare complication of this treatment approach” [31].

However none from the study designs discussed above are adequate to assess danger and to investigate a causal relationship in between CMT and VADS. Descriptive studies such as case reports and situation series are limited due to the absence of a comparison team [32,33]. For instance, inside a case analyze by which a patient’s headaches are reported to have enhanced after CMT, there is no way to determine regardless of whether the headaches would have improved without having the CMT. Likewise, if an individual experiences an adverse event (e.g. VADS) subsequent a treatment (e.g. CMT) or any other exposure there is no way to determine from a case report or situation series regardless of whether that adverse event would have happened regardless of the therapy or exposure. To undertake an assessment of risk one should use certainly one of three study designs:

Randomized, controlled trial (RCT): this is a style in which people are randomly assigned to certainly one of two or much more groups. Every team is supplied a treatment, placebo, sham or no treatment and the outcomes of the groups are compared. The RCT is regarded the Gold Regular for assessing therapy efficacy but is rarely utilized for danger assessment [34].

Prospective cohort analyze: this is a analyze which follows two or much more groups more than time, certainly one of which is exposed to a particular treatment or situation of curiosity and also the other of which is not, and compares them for a particular outcome [34,35]. This design functions well if the situation of interest is fairly common, for example heart disease. Possibly the most well-known cohort analyze may be the Framingham Heart Analyze (http://www.framinghamheartstudy.org/participants/original.html webcite accessed three June 2010), which has tracked the pace of heart disease and its association with various danger profiles in an original cohort of five,209 people because 1948 prospectively more than time. The prospective cohort design does not work well for studying a rare illness such as VADS, because 1 could follow thousands of sufferers for numerous many years and potentially in no way come across a case of VADS.

Case-control analyze: this may be the best investigation style for assessing the risks linked having a uncommon disorder for example VADS [33-35]. The case-control design compares a team of people who currently have the final result of interest to a similar team of individuals who don’t. The researchers compare the two groups for exposures to some particular therapy or other factor prior to development of illness.

Using the case-control analyze design enables researchers to gain insight into regardless of whether the apparent romantic relationship in between an exposure (e.g., CMT) and an outcome (e.g., VADS) that is observed in situation reports or case sequence is really a true association, and allows causal inferences to be created [34]. It does this within the case of the relationship in between CMT and VADS by identifying people who currently have VADS and comparing them to a matched manage team of people without VADS with regard to exposures to CMT prior to developing VADS. Important to minimizing bias in case-control studies is appropriate matching of cases and controls [35]. That’s, the manage team should be comparable to the “case” group. Reduction of bias in this regard is occasionally addressed by using a case-crossover style [36] in which cases serve as their own controls. This helps to much better match the groups which reduces bias by better controlling for confounding variables

Ever seriously tried to get back pain treatment ? If so, were you successful at it? Or were you one of those unfortunates who got derailed, distracted or stalled out? Most never even try. Some intended to try but stalled out for lack of knowing how to start. Some were put off, scared by the unknowns. Others went off and tried something else because they never really understood the potential benefits.

You get a clearer picture of what action to take when you have enough info. So let’s go ahead and examine 3 reasons why you might want to get back pain treatment.

Why not get bulging disc treatment? Many people have considered it. Some are doing it now. Most never got seriously interested in it and just drifted on to other things, basically staying how they were. Some didn’t get started with it because they had little idea of how to start. Others were discouraged as a result of big unknown factors.

Well, slow down here. Let’s explore that a bit. For you to consider, here’s three reasons why you should get bulging disc treatment.

Firstly, for the positive side, let me mention that treatment is possible and available. O.K., I hear your objection, that you’ve tried plenty of treatments in the past. It is a valid objection, I agree. However, let me bring to your attention the fact that there are some innovative treatment options available.

Second off, You truly really should consider that one such innovative treatment option is Muscle Balance Therapy. And, additionally, consider that this type of therapy targets the underlying cause of your bulging disc.

Third and finally, you’ll get the option to also consider inversion therapy. And which will imply that you treat your bulging disc by being inverted on an inversion table. In addition, on top of that, in addition, you are basically decompressing your spine – which is easing pressure

When you have had an opportunity to check out the reasons, and consider them, you’ll notice that a very good case can be made in favor of getting bulging disc treatment.

I don’t have to tell you that living in pain is horrible. Back pain is particularly difficult because it limits you in many, many ways from doing even the basic activities that to many people probably take for granted.

Look at this seriously for just a moment. Perhaps you really, in all seriousness, should get bulging disc treatment.

Discover how one can get bulging disc treatment by going to the Bulging Disc Treatment web site where you can learn about treatments for bulging discs.

New research suggests obesity may spread through social networks like a virus, and your friends can even live hundreds of miles away! I can’t help it – it’s in my genes. That’s been the surrender slogan for many overweight and obese individuals for years. And who could blame them? Even many doctors and researchers believed your ability to lose weight – or pack on pounds – was a function of your genetic make-up.

If you were dealt a bad genetic hand, your fate was to be fat and overweight. New information shows that this might not be the case. Be very careful who you befriend as it may cause you to become overweight. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that the obesity epidemic could spread like a virus through social networks. When a person becomes overweight, his friends and siblings are likely to gain weight as well in the long run.

The researchers evaluated a network of over twelve thousand people who underwent repeated measurements over a period of over thirty years. They found that when a person becomes obese, the chances that a friend will become obese increase by about fifty seven percent. Siblings of obese people have a forty percent increased risk of obesity, and their spouse’s risk increased by thirty seven percent overall.

On average, having an obese friend made a person gain 17 pounds, which put many people over the body mass index (BMI) measure for obesity. Female friendships did not seem to be impacted by obesity. But the chances that a man might gain weight from having a fat pal doubled for so-called mutual friends — friends who both listed each other as buddies.

Dr. Nicholas Christakis, the study’s lead author stated that there is an important implication here for a broadening perspective on treatment for obesity. Attitudes are changing about what constitutes an acceptable body size in both men and women. “We don’t think that this is the only cause of obesity. This is adding one additional factor or explanation.”

One big question raised by the study was, “why didn’t having obese friends affect the women’s weight?” “There is a strong social bias for women towards thinness,” said Dr. Robert Kushner, President of the American Board of Nutrition Physician Specialists. “Social norms may trump social networks here. Guys don’t have the same social pressure. Men may be more influenced by their friends.”

Other diet experts agree that the inner workings of male friendships may have a lot to do with obesity. “Current social stigma against obesity is greater among women than men. Women jointly discuss weight and support each other in dieting and exercising,” said Jeffery Sobal, a Professor of Nutritional Science at Cornell University. “Men may engage in joint activities that increase weight, such as consuming more calories or spending time in sedentary activities.”

And here’s something interesting reported by researcher James Fowler of Harvard University and Nicholas Christakis of the University of California in the city of San Diego. They say it is plausible that areas of the brain that correspond to actions such as eating food may be stimulated if these actions are observed by others.

They say that obesity and being overweight is socially contagious. he researchers found that to be true even if your loved ones live hundreds of miles away. Social ties seem to play a surprisingly strong role, even more than genes are known to do. “We were stunned to find that friends who are hundreds of miles away have just as much impact on a person’s weight status as friends who are right next door,” said Dr Fowler.

Despite their findings, the researchers said people should not sever their relationships. “There is a ton of research that suggests that having more friends makes you healthier,” Fowler said. “So the last thing that you want to do is get rid of any of your friends.” Clearly, this study shows the importance of behavior in weight gain overshadowing genetic make-up.

British scientists examined 300 people who became severely obese at a young age. This research was done to determine whether a faulty gene was involved that may have caused them to become obese. Researchers were looking specifically at the gene in charge of the leptin receptor. Leptin is a hormone in the body that controls appetite and can influence how much we feel like eating. It has been formerly implicated in animal obesity studies.

Scientists studied the obese participants to see whether this so-called obesity gene was disturbed in any which way. They discovered that only 3 percent of people had an abnormal leptin gene — indicating that leptin is probably not a factor for most obese and overweight people. And scientists in New Zealand are dispelling the widespread myth that obesity is caused by “bad genes.”

In what is referred to as a burst through discovery, scientists from Auckland University’s Liggins Institute have found that genetic pre-disposition to fatness can be reversed through good quality nutrition in early childhood. Their studies shows that when a mother is undernourished, her child’s body is pre-set to cope with a life of scarcity-the energy-dense fast food diet of the Western world results in kids who are likely to become fat and obese. This is from poor diet and nutrition.

In laboratory tests, newborn offspring from both well-fed and undernourished rats were given leptin, a hormone that signals to the body when it has eaten enough. When they became adults, the long-term effects were measured by looking at genes that regulate metabolism in the liver. Rats from well-fed mothers reacted to leptin in the opposite way to those from undernourished mothers.

The scientists urge mothers to eat a more balanced diet. This includes the right amounts of protein and vitamins during the pregnancy period. However, if the fetus is malnourished in the womb, the long-term effects can still be corrected through high-quality nutrition.

So what’s the final word on all this? Is it our genes that make us easily gain weight which leads to becoming overweight or even obese or is it our behavior that shapes (and sculpts) our bodies? The most likely correct answer is: BOTH. You are born with a set of genes you cannot change. Some people can eat and eat and never gain a pound. Others can’t. But as the recent research is showing – you have much more control over the final outcome than most people are willing to take credit for. No matter your genetic make-up, you can choose to eat properly and exercise.

Colic could be hard to diagnose in a infant. Nevertheless it is generally looked as signs and symptoms lasting three hours a day, 3 days a week for three weeks. Symptoms vary but consist usually of crying and irritability which doesn’t respond to soothing, possible signs of stomach upset or bloating, excessive wind, pulling the knees up close towards the chest and pulling faces suggesting discomfort in the exact same time.

It generally begins within the first few weeks of life, peaks at 2 months and continues to 4 or 5 months, with exceptions which finish sooner or may continue for much longer. Colic is a diagnosis of exclusion and every other possible causes of pain or irritability should be ruled out prior to diagnosing is confirmed.

The causes from the colic signs and symptoms may differ which is why it is hard to treat. There may be food sensitivities, musculo-skeletal structural disturbance or even poor care-giving. As a result there is no single clear-cut treatment which will resolve the issue. As in all osteopathic practice every case should be regarded on its personal.

Osteopathic evaluation might figure out that you will find strains through the thorax, abdomen or pelvis which could result in irritable bowel, constipation or food intolerance. There may also be dysfunction in the base of the skull affecting the main nerves supplying the gut area, which could in turn be aggravated by the development from the posterior cervical muscles, exacerbating tissue strains within the region.

Some colic might be more to perform with generalised discomfort. This could result from mechanical strains throughout birth affecting the chest, neck or head and resulting within the equivalent of headaches and associated nausea.

Osteopathic treatment can help with all of these potential causes of colic, and in general does have great outcomes. If a baby is taken for osteopathic assessment and treatment, anticipate lots of questions about the pregnancy and birth and even your own family history. Treatment is best carried out by a cranial osteopath with encounter in treating babies and children. Cranial osteopathy is explained elsewhere, but it is a refined and gentle form of treatment for adults and children which achieves excellent outcomes.

A United States Rep. named Ron Paul, a republican from Texas in the past has introduced a bill that would curb restrictions imposed by the FDA and FTC regarding health claims for dietary supplements. Why would he do that in this regard? Aren’t these restrictions good for the consumer to make sure they don’t get ripped off by snake oil salesmen making false claims when it comes to health?

Maybe they are. But maybe they are not. Check this story out and decide for yourself. The Cherry Grower’s Story dates back to 1999. At that time, a peer-reviewed report came out in the Journal of Natural Products. It was published by the American Chemical Society. This is the world’s largest scientific society at that time.

The study concluded that “tart cherries may relieve pain better than aspirin and many other anti-inflammatory drugs.” It turns out that consumption of about 20 cherries reduces inflammation in a similar manner as aspirin or Cox-2 inhibiting drugs without the lethal side effects of gastric bleeding or vitamin depletion associated with these drugs. The molecules in cherries, called anthocyanins, work to reduce inflammation at ten times less dosage than aspirin. [Journal Natural Products 1999 Feb; 62(2): 294-6] Pills that provide concentrated anthocyanins would make it even easier to consumers to achieve these health benefits.

When cherry growers began to cite this scientific study, the food and drug administration followed by sending a warning letter to twenty nine companies that market cherries threatening regulatory action if they did not remove the scientific information regarding the anti-inflammatory properties of cherries from their websites. The food and drug administration declared cherries to be “drugs” once health claims for a disease were associated with the product.
