Facet injections provide temporary pain relief that has resulted from facet joint inflammation. It is not fully understood how the pain is generated in the facet joint, but it is thought to result from several causes which could be arthritis, injury, degeneration, which can produce back pain symptoms potentially similar to that of disc degeneration.

Many patients achieve pain relief through treatment with a car Proctor, and for those who need supplemental therapy than simply the rehab and the adjustments in the office, a manipulation of anesthesia may do the trick. This is utilized when patients are not responding to normal treatment protocols, or could be having pain due to their degenerative condition that is just not getting relief.

The incidence of pain in America is at epidemic proportions. Approximately 1/3 of the country is dealing with a chronic pain problem. A lot of these individuals may qualify for surgery of some sort of help alleviate this pain. This could be a spinal fusion, raw joint replacement or a lumbar decompression surgery for a herniated disc.

Recently, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration finished its survey results on drug use in the US. The results showed some encouraging improvements along with some concerning statistics.

There are certain times when chronic pain cannot be fixed with simply physical therapy or surgery. It may be that a previous surgery did not work or made things worse. It could also be that the patient is suffering from a condition such as diabetic neuropathy where there is no surgical option and the patient simply has to deal with the pain.

About 1% of America at any one point in time has a herniated disc. About a 4th of these folks with back pain have a herniated disc and over 90% of these are situated in the lower back.

Occasionally a lumbar disc herniation pushes on a nerve root causing sciatica. The sciatic nerve is a combination of multiple nerve roots including the 4th and 5th lumbar nerve and the 1st sacral nerve root coming together.

Brian Spivack, M.D., of San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland, California, explains how a hiatal hernia can trigger acid reflux, that sensation of heartburn we get when acid from the stomach backs up into the esophagus. Dr. Spivack outlines ways to treat Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD, including modifications in diet plan plan, antacid medicines, weight reduction, and surgery to repair the hiatal hernia. He explains how repeated acid reflux can result in cancer with the esophagus and cautions individuals who get reflux two or three occasions per week to see their physician.
