These are Four Crucial Tips, which apply if you are an experienced rider or a beginner, if you are a top triathlete or a new Road Cyclist, contemplating some longer sportives. We have learned our fitness methods, through many hours and days on training camps with some of the world’s top riders. Here is a brief summary of four more points that we know really matter. Keep a regular eye on http://www.elitecyclingfitness.com for many other training and nutrition advice and subscribe for regular updates.

It’s important now to maintain your own training and eating diary too, for every day’s activity and your calorie consumption. You can consider these four new tips as golden rules – and if you just break ONLY one rule per week, then you WILL become fitter. Just one rule though. If some rules are very simple for you, that’s ok – just keep a mental note of the rules that you think work best for you to improve your fitness.

1. Forget the gym

Seriously, unless you want to emulate Sir Chris Hoy, there is hardly any need to build bulk with weight training. And any other form of light gym work or cross training soon become very boring, irrelevant for your attempt at Elite Cycling Fitness, or downright harmful – if you fail to adequately warm up and stretch your muscles correctly. It can be even worse, if you go to the Gym infrequently, that’s less than twice a week. There really is only one substitute for extra kilometres out on your bike – that’s time spent on your home bike trainer, or spinning. Otherwise a good course of yoga is recommended, to allow you to develop your stretching and relaxation abilities. But what about improving road sprinting power? There are many other road-based options for training to sprint well, so look out for our advice on Sprint Interval Training and our profiles of the world’s Top Road Sprinters.

2. Keep high pedalling revolutions with a cadence on low gears

This is essential for your long-term endurance. But also on each and every training ride. Low gears and high cadence will mean you reach fatigue more slowly and can dance up hills out of the saddle, even at the end of a two or three hour ride. This should be on gear ratios of around 42 x 15 or 43 x 16, for flat tempo riding.

3. Save the big chain ring for competition and interval sprint training

We never recommend much training in big gear ratios. It can quickly cause knee problems and muscle strain. You should always be able to retain a high cadence and feel a supple “suplesse” pedaling action, while training. Then, when you are racing, and need to maintain that cadence but on higher gears, your legs will be ready and more attuned. The exception is interval training – a great 40 minutes of intervals, sprinting (on quite roads with no side entrances) for trees, 250-350m ahead, in a gear of 53 x 14 or 52 x 15, will build the speed that you would need for shorter criterium racing. Do this every two minutes with easy soft-pedaling in between. Use sharp corners to get your legs used to the pain of jumping hard from dropping to a low speed. This is one of several forms of training we will share with you, to make you a better road sprinter.

4. Take every one of your body’s fitness signals VERY Seriously

As a serious cyclist you are pushing your body. Regularly you are pushing your heart and lungs and legs into areas of fatigue that normally improve your fitness, but sometimes cause levels of strain or fatigue that you should heed and respect. Overtrain and your body will pay you back. Don’t stretch and warm up properly before interval training and you can easily pull a muscle. Check your waking, morning pulse and recognise when it is higher than average. Then make that day a rest day. Respond to aching knees or strains by immediately checking your riding position with an experienced coach; plus remember to check the alignment of your pedal cleats and riding shoes. If you regularly suffer chronic lower back pain, learn the relevant yoga stretches, for before and after your rides. In training, spend more time riding out of the saddle and lower your gears. But see your doctor, chiropractor and sports physiotherapist * and deal with the causes rather than the symptoms.

Also try to get at least thirty minutes of massage therapy, when your muscles are sore, to improve blood flow to the sore muscle tissue and release micro-adhesions associated with muscle repair. This can be a painful technique to reduce soreness. But no pain no gain applies here too! Ask your senior teammates or doctor to recommend a good sports physiotherapist. Make sure you get at least eight to 10 hours of sleep to help with muscle recovery. Muscles that have been adequately repaired will not be sore. The body repairs itself best at night and important hormones are triggered, to signal repair to muscle tissue. Failing to get eight to 10 hours will decrease the hormonal response and recovery will be slower. This means the muscle tissue will be sore for much longer.

Right now you can get Ten of these tips to Achieve Elite Fitness Intelligently Learn from the techniques that kept Alan winning Elite Bike Races, including tough road races in Italy.

Low back pain is a very common condition with up to 80% of the people experiencing back pain at some point during their lives. Back pain has substantial impact on our lives and on the economy due to time taken off work.

While most people with back pain recover inside 6 weeks, some will go on to develop lingering pain and a loss of functionality — particularly if the pain is left undiagnosed and untreated by a professional physiotherapist.

What is the cause of lower back pain?

Most back pain is the results of irritation or poor function of the bones, joints, ligaments or muscles in your back. Such irritation can be the result of vertebral dysfunction, an event that results when the spinal backbones compress and irritate the delicate nerve structures of your lumbar region.

Other causes include muscle strain, sciatica, disc herniation, degenerative changes, inflammatory arthritis and breaks due to osteoporosis.

Other conditionscausing lower back pain include cancer, major infections and compression of the spinal nerve. lower back pain can even result from emotional, “psychosocial” and stress issues.

In all cases, get your back stiffness diagnosed as fast as possible at a physiotherapy clinic you have faith in.

How can you cope with and/or prevent lower back pain?

Avoid too much rest. It seems logical to feel you could stop moving and stay in bed all day. But usually, you need to stay active. Research supports the advantages of moving about as soon as reasonable after your injury. Take part in light activity such as swimming, walking and, naturally, a range of physiotherapy exercises

Stay Fit. One of the most highly efficient paths to fight low back pain and prevent it from occurring is to remain physically fit. The stronger your aerobic fitness, the better oxygen delivery you’ll get to your muscles, and the less sensitive you will be to pain responses in your back. Be sure to exercise at least 30-40 minutes every second day – you’ll feel great and help your back at the same time.

Don’t remain in the same position for over 30 minutes. If you spend a large part of your day working at your desk or driving a vehicle then you may be increasing your possibility of suffering from a bad back. Remember that joints in your back need to move. The more they move, the fitter they are. Be ready to get up and stretch at frequent intervals, go for walks or at least adjust your body position each half an hour.

How can a physiotherapy facility assist you with your low back pain?

Physiotherapy treatment of lower back pain can restore function to poorly moving spinal joints, as well as reduce muscle stress and raise your muscle strength. The results are improved movement, decreased nerve irritation and reduced pain.

Most treatments will be tailored to your individual case, following your complete physiotherapy review and diagnosis.

Your physiotherapy clinic should offer these low back pain treatments:

Irritation management modalities including some elements of electrotherapy, ultrasound, laser and acupuncture.

Exercise- dependent on the diagnosis, may include range of motion (ROM), adaptability, bracing, endurance, and functional exercise

Manual therapy- soft tissue and joint mobilizations to help reduce strain and joint stiffness

Education- including posture, correct exercise, prevention, body movement and discomfort management.

It is wise to understand the importance of massage therapy. This kind of treatment has been commonplace for centuries and practiced widely throughout the world as a means of healing. It helps your body and mind to heal in several ways and this will largely be dependent on the sort of massage that is done and the level of pressure which is applied.

It is possible for you to get an all over body treatment for the muscles to be loosened up and to promote relaxed feelings. It allows the mind and the body to properly unwind. When this level of comfort is not required then have a treatment which focuses on one particular area like the Indian Head Massage. This allows scalp problems to be addressed and headaches to be overcome.

Once the neck and shoulders are massaged it allows you to feel the release of tension in this particular area which may be due to working behind a desk or to having to complete manual tasks. This are may be loosened up and this will help with matters of endurance and means you will notably reduce your risk of injury.

It is now something which should be used as a part of a healthy and balanced lifestyle. When combined with the right diet and exercise and correct amount of sleep it can really help you to feel a great deal better in the long term. This is especially helpful when you want to help the muscles to recover fully from any bouts of strenuous exercise you have undertaken.

Understanding how powerful touch can really be means that you reap notable benefits which can be long lasting. Often you’ll notice some changes in a short period of time such as a few weeks. You will then see things get progressively better as time passes and not only help you to feel better but has a positive impact on your appearance as well.

In addition to generally being helpful for your health and well being it has other specific advantages such as helping you to have better circulation. Good circulation is essential if you want to have healthy heart and avoid issues such as clogged arteries. This is something which has also been seen to improve the condition of your skin.

This can mean that you will avoid issues such as having feet and hands which feel excessively cold and it also assists the body in removing toxins. This means that the condition of your skin will be improved. This is particularly useful after you have lost weight and can be utilized in order to target areas where fat has clustered.

As you get older your body becomes at greater risk of injury and this is why it is best to prepared for this eventuality. The importance of massage therapy is that is helps to keep muscle limber and means you are less susceptible to aches and pains. These can often be caused by the regular wear and tear that is naturally occurring when you are living your life.

Chiro-Med Rehab Centre 10144 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill, ON L4C 1T6 (905) 918-0419 provides several services including massage therapy Richmond Hill and physiotherapy Richmond Hill to help patients overcome physical ailments.

The old manner of treating back pain was rest and pain killers. In fact, I was advised two months ago when my back pain started to go to bed for a month. However, more modern thoughts on the subject are that modest exercise is better for your back.

I, for one, could not lie in bed for a month because of backache, because whilst my back was at its worst, I could not rest in one position for over a minute or two and sleep was practically impossible.

I was in too much pain to travel to the GP’s surgery and I was not given a home visit. So, I merely sat at home and waited to get better. Then my wife arranged a masseur to come around.

The massage helped, but she also gave me some stretching exercises to try, which I have since seen recommended by some physiotherapists on the Net.

To begin with, she suggested strolling as far as I could each day. Set achievable goals, but extend them whenever you reach them. Permit yourself one rest on both the outward and homeward journeys and after a time, try to do without the pause.

This has helped very well for me and from not being able to walk to the bathroom a month ago, I bin now walk around 350 yards without a stop. I place most of the reason for my recovery, such as it is, down to walking.

I have a slipped disc and a trapped sciatic nerve, so leaning backwards was agony for me (and still hurts), but I found that rotating at the hips helps loosen things up.

There are two methods, I do this: 1] place you hands on your hips and push down or 2] clasp your hands behind your head; then standing with feet apart or sitting on a chair with no back, revolve your upper body as low as you can in a circle to the right eight times and then to the left. Increase the repetitions as and when you are able.

Sitting on a chair with a high back, reach back over your shoulders and grip the back of the chair (or you may clasp the sides of the chair). Then keeping your bottom still, try to turn to the left eight times and then to the right. Do it slowly, no erratic movements, but really push.

Lying on your back, bring one knee up to your body; pull it if you need to. First one knee eight times, then the other, and then both together. A variation on this is to lie on the floor, bend your knees and place your feet flat on the floor. Then put one foot on the other knee and pull that knee towards you. The second version can also be done seated.

Lying on your back, lift your straight legs as high as you can, keeping them together. You will probably not manage much, so get someone to push them right up to ninety degrees and hold. Push them more towards your face. Lift your posterior off the ground if you like. It sounds as if this one will really hurt, but it was all right for me.

These exercises were recommended to me by a personal masseur who has been extremely well trained. They are to suit my situation, so perhaps you had better take advice before trying them yourself.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on a variety of subjects, but is now involved with sciatica and acupuncture.

Champions Manchester United began their Premier League campaign on Sunday afternoon with a win 2-0 win at the Hawthorns, although it did come at a price as they now found themselves in the midst of an injury crisis at the most unwanted part of their title defence.

Both of their first-choice centre-backs, Serbian and club captain Nemanja Vidic as well as England international Rio Ferdinand, both picked up an injury causing them to limp off in the second half of their Premier League encounter with West Brom at the weekend.

Vidic could only be missing for a short period time after he aggravated a troublesome calf problem, but Ferdinand faces around six weeks of sports injury treatment after again damaged his hamstring which has haunted him throughout his carrier.

Meanwhile, young right-back Rafael damaged a shoulder in training and faces a long spell on the sidelines with added sessions of shoulder physiotherapy.

“Rafael will be out of action for around three to four months after dislocating his shoulder during training ahead of their trip to West Brom,” read a statement released by the club.

United’s defence has been further depleted by an injury to left-back Patrice Evra, meaning that not one of the first-choice back four managed to finish their game at the weekend (August 14th).

And finally, Mexican goal getter Javier Hernandez-who enjoyed a last year after his transfer to Manchester united last summer – is also unlikely to feature before the end of the month (August), as he also missed out Manchester United’s opener at the weekend due to a concussion during a pre-season.

With testing opponents due to visit Old Trafford in the coming weeks Sir Alex Ferguson will be hoping that he can get his best players back as soon as possible before the likes of Arsenal take a trip up to Manchester.

Michael Fielding writes articles on behalf of Aigburth Physiotherapy.Aigburth Physio provide Aigburth Physiotherapy and Physiotherapy for Individuals in the surrounding area.

Our bodies are quite amazing really. We hardly think about all the things that our bodies must do day in and day out in order for us to stay alive. Sitting down and watching television still requires our bodies to be constantly working so that we can enjoy whatever we are watching on television. While our bodies are amazing, we hardly take the time to appreciate everything that they are doing for us, and rarely think about anything going wrong. We forget that our bodies are complex machines that have a million different things going on at once, and that at any one time something could go wrong. Now while a few of us will exercise everyday or play sports in the weekends to keep everything fit and running Ok, a lot of us will not, and this can pose a bit of a problem. Unfortunately it also hinders those who exercise as well, because we all know that something could go wrong, and before you know it we need the help of an Auckland physiotherapist.

When we take care of our bodies by exercising and going to the gym, we forget that something could go wrong if we do not stretch properly or forget to warm up correctly, and then all of a sudden we could feel a slight pain somewhere and wonder how on earth we managed to do that. Well it happens all the time to people all over the world, the difference is that a lot of people do not do anything about it. When we feel a little bit of pain we tend to leave it for a few days because surely it will go away right?

If you are the type of person who exercises regularly then you will most likely see someone about the pain when it started to occur, it is the people that do not exercise that tend to do nothing about the pain. We seem to think that if we do not do anything apart from watch television and walk here and there that the pain cannot be anything major; well that just is not the case. Our bodies as complex as they are can have something go wrong at any time during the day just because we moved to quickly or sat funny. We do not have to be running a marathon for something major to happen, it can be reaching for the remote or bending down to pick something up of the floor. Whatever you were doing, if pain started happening then of course it is serious and something has gone wrong.

A lot of us will still walk around for a few days and pretend like nothing hurts, because how silly is it that we hurt ourselves reaching for something stupid like a remote? Well it happens more often than what you might think and the longer you leave any type of injury the worse it will get. Pain happens to let us know that something is wrong, and it does not matter how we injured ourselves, all that matters is that we injured ourselves and something should be done about it.

If you were doing something and started feeling pain in your joints and muscles then it is probably a good idea that you look into an Auckland physiotherapist because you do not want the issue getting worse. It does not matter how you hurt yourself at all because there is probably someone out there that hurt themselves in a similar or more humiliating manner.

Do you have a pain in your joints or have injured yourself and think you might need an Auckland Physiotherapist to help with the pain? Then give the people at OnForm a call right away!

We all like to be active one point or another throughout our lives right? Whether we are enjoying playing our favourite sport, or participating in a daily walk with our friends, or perhaps chasing the dog around the lawn. Since we have two legs we do often like to use them for different variations of exercise and fun while we still can. The thing about constant exercise and movement is that there is always a slight chance that a tendon or muscle could get strained with all the tension; and unfortunately there is a slight possibility of this happening. The main concern about muscle and joints is that they are always moving even if we are sitting down. There is tension for our body to stand upright and keep everything together even when we don’t notice. Think about buildings in an earthquake, the constant movement of a first earthquake followed by all the aftershocks leaves the structure with strain, and eventually something gives way. This is usually when we seek the advice of an Auckland Physiotherapist.

When we need to see an Auckland physiotherapist it means that something must have gone wrong within our system and it has become a big enough problem that we cannot deal with it any longer. It can take people quite a long time to go and see a physiotherapist because first we go see a doctor and maybe they prescribe us with some medication that would make everything better right? However when the medication runs out and the pain still has not gone away, then we are left with nothing else to do but go and see someone else.

Muscles hurt all the time growing up, and occasionally it is not a problem at all and we can deal with it ourselves. That is why it is difficult to tell what is actually going on, because sometimes our bodies just ache for no reason what so ever right? When you get up in the morning you could have some aches, or when you walk perhaps there is a slight pain in your leg and you might have had that forever. Since the body is so complex, we rarely know what is going on with our own one and do not tend to do anything about pain until it gets severe. Of course when the injury is bad enough and the pain will not let up, then that is a sure enough sign that something has gone wrong.

It is funny to think that reaching for the remote control could injure us in some way, but it can. A sudden movement that you have not done in a while can make a muscle or ligament twist and turn strangely causing something to hurt or give way. It is like when you turn your neck too sharply and get that jolt of pain which lasts for a few days; injuries happen like that all the time. The only thing we can do is recognise when it is serious and when it is not.

We turn to a Auckland physiotherapist when we have injured ourselves and the pain is just too great. The injury does not have to come from an amazing sports accident or award winning touchdown, it can be as simple as reaching for the biscuits that are just out of reach or bending down to pick up your child. The body is a weird and fascinating component that will give us plenty of signs if something is wrong.

If you think you might need an Auckland Physiotherapist because of an injury or plaguing pain, however you are not sure where to look, then give the people at Onform Physiotherapy a ring now!

You might think that you will receive a jab here and there and perhaps a few massages right? The fact is that there are so many different techniques in dealing with the body and allowing it to heal fast and properly that we are not fully aware of everything that can be done to help this process along. When we think of getting injured there are always doctors involved and medication and perhaps a sling and crutches, however what about the body’s natural healing power aided by what physiotherapists actually do? I was intrigued when my partner hurt himself at work ( un-coordination was a factor here) and he was referred to a physiotherapist. I wanted to know some of the techniques that were used and how and why you would fit the criteria to be able to receive the treatment. One of the techniques that I found interesting was one called the Kinesio taping method.

Auckland physiotherapists use a number of differing methods when helping injuries heal. If you are passed on to one, then your injury is assessed in order to see which methods would help the injury heal, and perhaps which methods would not. For instance, if it is a torn ligament compared to an ankle injury concerning the bone and weakening, then the same methods would probably not be used; and if they are it would be in varying degrees. The body has many different components and structures to it and therefore sometimes we have to focus on certain areas within the body and how it is affecting the overall structure; this is why they use different methods.

The Kinesio taping method was used on my partner and was quite fascinating since I had previously known nothing about it. Unless you have had to deal with an injury or studied physiotherapy then I would not blame you if you had never heard of it either. The main ideals behind the method is that it goes off the theory that our bodies have their own built in healing mechanism, our bodies can heal themselves over a period of time of course, however sometimes it would be nice if whatever was stopping us from healing faster could be eliminated; this is what the Kinesio taping method tries to do. You see, when we get injured there are barriers in our body that stops us from healing, this could be because of the injury itself, and the Kinesio method can help to positively influence by removing those barriers that impede the healing process.

The Kinesio tape that was used on my partner’s injuries provided an extended soft tissue manipulation, which basically is like having someone constantly working on your soft tissue and massaging them. It would be like if you could have your physiotherapist at home with you all the time, never resting until you are fully healed. The method allows for faster healing because it is always working on the muscle and injury; it never stops. It was truly interesting to see how something I had never understood, or even knew about actually worked.

If we get referred onto Auckland physiotherapists and we have never been before, it can be quite scary and stressful. When you are in pain you really do not want to experience something new that you have never heard of before and are not even sure if it will work or not. Take the time to listen and see what the methods are actually going to be doing to your injuries and your body and ask as much questions as you need to. I feel better knowing exactly what is happening with my partner, and feel good that at least the method is working and helping everything heal faster; perhaps you will too.

If you are searching for Auckland Physiotherapists because of an injury or plaguing pain, however you are not sure where to look, then give the people at Onform Physiotherapy a buzz right away!

A car crash can cause many different injuries to your body. Some injuries seem more recurrent than others. If an injury occurs on the face or head, it will be scratches, bruises, lacerations and loss or damage to dentures. Whiplashes and disc injuries are common in the spine, in areas such as the neck, mid, and low back. Sprains, strains, dislocations, and fractures are more common in the extremities, such as the arms and legs.

A car accident can be an emergency situation when the victims have to be rushed to the hospital in an effort to save their lives. Here, medical attention will be administered by a medical doctor who may prescribe pain medication, x-rays and perhaps surgery if it is deemed necessary. Alternatively, it may be found that the victims have suffered damage to the musculoskeletal. This is where a chiropractor comes in.
A chiropractor specializes in the treatment of muscles and joints with emphasis on the spine. Their method of treatment is holistic and offers hands-on care. Chiropractors work by making gentle adjustments to the spine, and they might recommend physiotherapy, therapeutic massage, and/or exercise to recondition muscles and ligaments which may have suffered injury.

Some car accident victims who have sought the services of a chiropractor have reported that they have felt better faster with chiropractic care than with medical drugs or doing nothing. This is especially true for those whom have suffered soft tissue and whiplash injuries.

Another advantage of using chiropractic treatment after a car accident is that a chiropractor may be able to detect injuries that were not identified right after an accident. When a person faces a situation such as an accident, the body’s natural response is to put the body in defense mode. One way the body tries to protect itself is by producing hormones called endorphins which are natural painkillers. Once these hormones get going, an injured person may not feel pain right away and may not recognize that they have suffered an injury. An examination by a chiropractor is therefore recommended as a precaution even after being attended to by a medical doctor.

Some car accident victims also complain of persistent pain even after long periods of continued prescription drugs. This may happen because the effects of drugs have worn off and the cause of the pain is still there.
Recovering from car accident injuries can be a long and painful process. Making use of a therapy that will hasten the recovery of general body ache, offer targeted pain relief and detect any underlying problems is the sensible thing to do. A trained chiropractor is the perfect physician to do so.

Most people at one time or another in their lives suffers back pain. Numerous reasons exist as to why this can happen. Furthermore, there are many different kinds of back pain that one can experience. Physiotherapists like Sheffield Physiotherapy to ease this pain use acupuncture. This will be done in conjunction with mobilization of joints, manipulation and exercise.

As far back as 1000 BC acupuncture has been around. The Chinese people used this for medicinal purposes. It was then found to be of value in relieving back pain. Needles were inserted into the body with a mind to adjust the Chi in the body. Chi is the flow of energy fields in the body. A chi imbalance can be the catalyst for pain, disability or illness.

Certain factors will influence the outcome of acupuncture on a client. People are not the same and their conditions can differ as well. Factors such as the duration of the pain and the extent of the pain can influence results. The majority of muscular back pains should respond favorably to acupuncture.

During an acupuncture session, the physiotherapist will insert anywhere from two to sixteen needles into the patients body. Only single-use, sterile needles will be use. These needles are much finer than normal needles used in injections. The needles are quickly inserted through the skin, into the tissues.

An acupuncture session involves the insertion of between two to sixteen needles into the client’s body. Needles are sterile and have not been used before. These are a lot finer than needles used with syringes. These are inserted quickly into the tissues via the skin.

The client should not experience too much pain. Sensations of a mild pinprick or a scratch type sensation have been reported by clients. There will be a warm, heavy feeling when the needle is inserted. Following this there could be numbness and mild ache experienced. These sensations show that the body is being stimulated to start facilitating the relief of pain. This process is called De Qui. The condition determines how long the needles stay in the body. This is how Sheffield Physiotherapy achieves relief of pain with the use of acupuncture.
