Plantar fasciitis is a term that is used to describe the irritation of the tendon band, the plantar fascia, that runs alongside the bottom of the foot. When there are small tears or rips in this tissue, the result is discomfort and pain. This can affect standing and walking.

Plantar fasciitis can be caused by a number of different factors. Often, standing for extended time periods can be the root of the issue. Ill fitting shoes or foot ware that provides insufficient support of the foot arch is another culprit. Being overweight can put pressure on the tendon as well.

Women who are pregnant may notice pain in their feet. This is due to weight gain through the pregnancy, and many women will not have further problems after giving birth. Rarely the issue can persist. Running and walking excessively is also attributed to this issue, and if pain is noticed when increasing an exercise regime a doctor should be consulted. The increased activity should be slowed or stopped until the problem is addressed.

People with plantar fasciitis often complain of pain being worst first thing in the morning. This can be sue to inactivity during the night. This tendon is not particularly flexible and when resting, it can lose even more flexibility, causing pain upon rising. It can cause problems bending the feet as well, and can eventually radiate pain as far as the knee as a result.

See a doctor if any of these problems are experienced. A diagnosis is relatively simple, and can be facilitated by a physical exam. The physician will want to observe standing and walking practices of the patient. If this does not give a definitive diagnosis, an x ray or MRI may be necessary to provide confirmation.

Many patients find improvement with the use of orthopedic inserts or foot ware. These are specially designed foot products that help to improve the arch of the foot and are very effective in helping cases of plantar fasciitis. If these have been recommended, improvement will be seen only if used as directed, which is most often that they be worn at all times.

Many times, there are exercises recommended that will dramatically improve the flexibility of the foot and help alleviate discomfort. The affected foot can be taped, but if this improves the situation, it is an indicator that supports may be needed. Icing the area and massaging can be of benefit and may help reduce swelling and loosen the muscles in the foot. The administration of anti-inflammatory medications is helpful for many patients, and should be done under the direction of a doctor.

Severe cases may require surgery to try and correct the problem. This is not often recommended, and all other treatment possibilities should be exhausted before considering invasive treatments. Be sure to follow the directions given by a doctor or foot care specialist as they will best know how to reduce pain and help to resolve the issue.

So you want to feel healthy, more energy, and less stiff. Then get out and walk! Walking benefits most everybody, regardless of age. About 67 million men and women are walking regularly. Convinced that it is good exercise, they’re making it a part of their daily routine. And their numbers are increasing every year, according to the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

The benefits of walking, it seems, go on and on. The American Podiatric Medical Association recommends walking to ward off a number of related ills. The following is just a small list of benefits when it comes to walking. Walking strengthens your heart and lungs, and improves circulation. This is great for people worrying about heart disease and circulation problems. Another benefit of walking is that it reduces obesity and high blood pressure. It also boosts your metabolic rate and lowers your cholesterol. Another great thing is that it improves muscle tone. And for those that are always stressed out, it reduces stress and tension. An additional benefit is that it reduces arthritis pain and stops bone tissue decay.

Walking actually strengthens your heart and lungs. This benefit will create an improved circulation. By walking, you elevate your heart rate and you teach the body how to use oxygen efficiently. The work should feel like it is making you “warm and slightly out of breath.”Your heart is a muscle, so it is increasing in strength just as leg muscles increase in strength when they work out.

Did you know that walking and other exercise increases the blood flow to the brain? Many physicians recommend adding regular walking and exercise as a natural treatment to relieve a bout of depression. The cause of depression is related to brain chemistry. By getting your brain to release more of the happy chemicals, the endorphins, you achieve naturally what many prescription drugs and herbs try to do.

Now, when you are ready to begin, consider these strolling and running tips from the United States Podiatric Medicine Association. First of all, move at a steady pace. Move briskly enough to make your cardiac beat faster. Remember to breathe better and more deeply. Keep good position. Stroll with your head erect, back straight, and abdomen flat. Be sure to swing your arms. Keep them relaxed, as they may increase your pace! Maintain proper foot motion. As you stroll, land on the heel of your foot and roll forward to push off on the ball of your foot. Stay on level stretches. Avoid excessively steep hills and embanked roadways. And finally, be sure to cool down when your routine is complete.

After a long, brisk walk this will help pump blood back up from your legs to where it’s needed. Here’s where some stretching exercises can be helpful. And don’t forget, if you ever have any questions or concerns about your health, talk to a chiropractor. Contact them with your, “Here’s what I was wondering about,” type questions, instead of “Guess what I just did,” statements. They are there to help, and don’t enjoy anything more than participating in your life long good health!
