These are Four Crucial Tips, which apply if you are an experienced rider or a beginner, if you are a top triathlete or a new Road Cyclist, contemplating some longer sportives. We have learned our fitness methods, through many hours and days on training camps with some of the world’s top riders. Here is a brief summary of four more points that we know really matter. Keep a regular eye on http://www.elitecyclingfitness.com for many other training and nutrition advice and subscribe for regular updates.

It’s important now to maintain your own training and eating diary too, for every day’s activity and your calorie consumption. You can consider these four new tips as golden rules – and if you just break ONLY one rule per week, then you WILL become fitter. Just one rule though. If some rules are very simple for you, that’s ok – just keep a mental note of the rules that you think work best for you to improve your fitness.

1. Forget the gym

Seriously, unless you want to emulate Sir Chris Hoy, there is hardly any need to build bulk with weight training. And any other form of light gym work or cross training soon become very boring, irrelevant for your attempt at Elite Cycling Fitness, or downright harmful – if you fail to adequately warm up and stretch your muscles correctly. It can be even worse, if you go to the Gym infrequently, that’s less than twice a week. There really is only one substitute for extra kilometres out on your bike – that’s time spent on your home bike trainer, or spinning. Otherwise a good course of yoga is recommended, to allow you to develop your stretching and relaxation abilities. But what about improving road sprinting power? There are many other road-based options for training to sprint well, so look out for our advice on Sprint Interval Training and our profiles of the world’s Top Road Sprinters.

2. Keep high pedalling revolutions with a cadence on low gears

This is essential for your long-term endurance. But also on each and every training ride. Low gears and high cadence will mean you reach fatigue more slowly and can dance up hills out of the saddle, even at the end of a two or three hour ride. This should be on gear ratios of around 42 x 15 or 43 x 16, for flat tempo riding.

3. Save the big chain ring for competition and interval sprint training

We never recommend much training in big gear ratios. It can quickly cause knee problems and muscle strain. You should always be able to retain a high cadence and feel a supple “suplesse” pedaling action, while training. Then, when you are racing, and need to maintain that cadence but on higher gears, your legs will be ready and more attuned. The exception is interval training – a great 40 minutes of intervals, sprinting (on quite roads with no side entrances) for trees, 250-350m ahead, in a gear of 53 x 14 or 52 x 15, will build the speed that you would need for shorter criterium racing. Do this every two minutes with easy soft-pedaling in between. Use sharp corners to get your legs used to the pain of jumping hard from dropping to a low speed. This is one of several forms of training we will share with you, to make you a better road sprinter.

4. Take every one of your body’s fitness signals VERY Seriously

As a serious cyclist you are pushing your body. Regularly you are pushing your heart and lungs and legs into areas of fatigue that normally improve your fitness, but sometimes cause levels of strain or fatigue that you should heed and respect. Overtrain and your body will pay you back. Don’t stretch and warm up properly before interval training and you can easily pull a muscle. Check your waking, morning pulse and recognise when it is higher than average. Then make that day a rest day. Respond to aching knees or strains by immediately checking your riding position with an experienced coach; plus remember to check the alignment of your pedal cleats and riding shoes. If you regularly suffer chronic lower back pain, learn the relevant yoga stretches, for before and after your rides. In training, spend more time riding out of the saddle and lower your gears. But see your doctor, chiropractor and sports physiotherapist * and deal with the causes rather than the symptoms.

Also try to get at least thirty minutes of massage therapy, when your muscles are sore, to improve blood flow to the sore muscle tissue and release micro-adhesions associated with muscle repair. This can be a painful technique to reduce soreness. But no pain no gain applies here too! Ask your senior teammates or doctor to recommend a good sports physiotherapist. Make sure you get at least eight to 10 hours of sleep to help with muscle recovery. Muscles that have been adequately repaired will not be sore. The body repairs itself best at night and important hormones are triggered, to signal repair to muscle tissue. Failing to get eight to 10 hours will decrease the hormonal response and recovery will be slower. This means the muscle tissue will be sore for much longer.

Right now you can get Ten of these tips to Achieve Elite Fitness Intelligently Learn from the techniques that kept Alan winning Elite Bike Races, including tough road races in Italy.

Spinal decompression therapy is very different from what you are used to experience or just hear. The machines are used to relieve back pain and health the spine and it has been a great success for patients who have that type of condition because the technology that is utilized by that unprecedented technique allows you to get rid of neck and back problems without pain and any side effects. Spinal decompression method decompresses the areas of hurt and does not apply drugs, surgery or any other invasive ways of treating your condition.

People live and accidents happen. Sports injuries, car accidents, lifting heavy stuff or not following the rules of ergonomics while at work and many more causes of back and neck pain can arise and get worse with time if not properly and timely handled.

The majority of people realize the necessity of doing at least something about their conditions even when they are not that serious, not yet. Spinal decompression is just a very handy device that was developed on the basis of simple traction methods which, however, cannot be applied to the spine while patients experience acute or chronic neck or back pain because of the simplicity of the traction device.

Pain is bad, nobody wants it and sometimes it gets so bad that people want the only thing to be happy again which is pain relief. It is easy to lose the hope and start a risky adventure which can result in a damage to one’s health that might never change to the better. May be yes, may be not, who knows? It’s not worth it.

Anyway, all other methods and techniques that ever existed to treat neck and back pain cannot be compared to the benefits of doing spinal decompression that go beyond any imaginable level of understanding just because it has to be experienced.

Both doctors and patients rave about amazing results that they get when using the above mentioned machines which are called DRXC9000 for neck pain and DRX9000 for back pain. The majority of them get relief right after the first session which is about fifteen minutes long but the rest of them are required to be vetting the treatment on the regular basis.

For the first time ever, we have a hope when and where there was no hope before which is brought to us by the leading specialists of modern technological equipment that has to do with the field of alternative medicine and spinal decompression devices are specifically designed for cases of failed traditional medicine methods.

In order to be able to find a decent place that offers the services, one should pay particular attention the age of the practice as well as patients’ reviews. You can even contact some of them and talk to find out their opinion about the doctor, equipment, space, privacy, schedule and so on. You could do that with several medical offices to see which one would best meet your requirements.

If you are experiencing neck and back pain and looking for an effective way to handle the cause and get rid of that pain for life, look no more, because spinal decompression therapy is here for you and your health, do not think twice, try and see if it works for you.

The most effective way to get rid of back pain is the innovation that produces amazing results. It is spinal decompression. Stop suffering.

Most people, if they have any sort of ache in the lower back presume that it is due to having slept badly or having sat badly at their desk or behind the wheel.

Most people, if they have any sort of ache in the lower back presume that it is due to having slept badly or having sat badly at their desk or behind the wheel.

Although this might normally be the case, the spine runs down the centre of your back, so back ache should be in the centre as well.

A herniated or slipped disc, however, may trap the sciatic nerve which can cause pain to radiate down one side into the buttock and even as far down as the lower leg. This sort of pain is also usually on one side or the other, although it can pinch both sciatic nerves and affect both sides on infrequent occasions.

You can also have back pain that is more accurately related to the pelvis. The hip bones (ilia) are really loose but are firmly bound to the pelvis (sacrum) with ligaments. This set-up allows the sacroiliac joints to soak up shocks from walking and jumping.

The sacroiliac joints can also cause pain and a dull, lower back ache although it is more common in older women who have had lots of children. So, with all these types of back ache, it is hardly surprising that individuals dismiss the first signs of back ache.

However, there is another cause of ‘lower back ache’, which appears to be more on one side than the other. The reason for this form of ache is very serious and has nothing to do with the back, although it may seem like back pain, particularly at first. The cause I am imagining is kidney injury.

Kidney injury may become life-threatening; it may creep up on you and it may lead to a lifelong requirement for dialysis or a kidney transplant. It is far more dangerous than back ache. Most significant kidney concerns begin with a minor infection, which is left untreated for so long that it ruins the performance of the kidney.

If you are so misfortunate as to acquire this type of difficulty, hope that it is accompanied by a fever, because this is often the first sign someone gets that the problem does not lie in his or her back.

The fever will give you hot and cold flushes and even delusions. Kidney infections are usually begun in the bladder or the urinary tract and are called UTI’s.

Women and diabetics are most prone to UTI’s and therefore kidney infections too. So, if you do not frequently get lower back ache, or if you fall into the groups most at risk, you should not dismiss lateral lower back pain as inconsequential.

Always go to see your physician who can judge from your reaction to a couple of simple bends, what the likely cause of your back ache is. This can then be confirmed with an X-Ray. Do not have to have dialysis or a kidney transplant merely for the sake of a visit to the physician.

A slipped disc, otherwise called a herniated disc, is a widespread cause of back pain. many things can cause a disc to slip out of position, but it is first helpful to be able to envisage what a healthy back bone or spine looks like. The spine is a succession of discs sitting each on top of the one below with all the primary nerves running through and along side of it.

That is, they do not sit completely on top of each other, there is a gap between them, which allows us to bend and twist. When we stand up right, the discs are supposed to go back to their original position, which is absolutely horizontal, quarter to and quarter past the hour on the clock face.

A slipped disc is usually when the lowest disc does not return to its standard position but sticks at, say, twenty to and ten past the hour. The lower edge of the disc, the side pointing to twenty to the hour might come to sit on a major nerve – like the sciatic nerve which runs from the waist down to the foot on either side of the body.

This condition is known as a slipped disc with a trapped nerve. The pain it causes starts in the low back but radiates into the buttock and down the leg following the sciatic nerve. Many individuals call this sciatica. It is not the sciatic nerve’s fault that it is giving pain – it is perfectly healthy – but it is being squashed by the herniated disc which is causing it to become inflamed.

Therapy for this condition focuses on relieving the pain and allowing the disc to float back to the horizontal, thus freeing the nerve and stopping the leg pain. Often the leg pain is much worse than the back pain.

In my case, the back pain is always there as a dull ache, but I can live with that. The real problems comes around three to five minutes after standing up. A pain starts in my calf like severe cramp and that rises into my buttock making my leg too painful to place on the ground. The sole relief is to sit down again or to take my weight on my arms by leaning on a table.

I have found some stretch exercises to help, but because I cannot stand for long, lots of of them are ruled out. Despite not exercising a lot, I have lost around 14 pounds and this has assisted my back to some extent.

If my back gets bad, I lie on the floor and place my feet up, so that my posture is similar to a sitting position, but without the weight of my upper body on my slipped disc. This is very useful. I have also found that adopting the foetal position helps a lot.

I also have massage therapy every 7-10 days. It hurts a great deal at the time, but by the time the masseuse is walking down the drive, I already feel better and my condition continues to improve until she returns. Six weeks ago, I could not walk, now I am able to walk around 500 metres without help.

It has been asserted many times by health care professionals that it is likely that at least 80% of people will suffer from some kind of back pain in their lives and that number will probably rise quite significantly too. The factors are simple enough.

It has been asserted many times by health care professionals that it is likely that at least 80% of people will suffer from some kind of back pain in their lives and that number will probably rise quite significantly too. The factors are simple enough.

More people are living longer and parts wear out; obesity is on the rise and more people are sitting at desks for longer than ever before. These are also causes why lots of individuals do not get sufficient exercise.

Some of them are self-fulfilling prophesies too: you get pain in your back from sitting too long in a bad posture, so exercise becomes difficult, so you avoid exercise and your bad back becomes worse and so on.

You put on weight because you do not exercise sufficiently, so exercise becomes a problem so you avoid exercising, so you put on more weight, and so on.

It is obvious that people need to break out of that vicious circle in order to cure their backache and obesity. One of the ways of curing lower back pain is to build up the muscles that support that area of the back. In fact, the muscles do not only need to be strong, they have to become evenly balanced.

It is hard for you to distinguish whether your muscles are evenly balanced or not without specialized help, so you could look into that, or you could go about a light exercise routine which will have the impact of under-training your robust muscles and over-training your weaker ones, until they are back in equilibrium. . Yoga postures and breathing exercises are a useful means of going about this or you could just attempt taking easy exercise regularly and adding some breathing exercises. The sorts of general light exercise that I mean are walking and swimming.

Swimming is especially useful as an exercise for sufferers from back pain as water not just takes weight off the back, it actually supports it.

Walking and swimming are the best and cheapest natural normalizing exercises that there are. Yoga may do it faster, but walking and swimming will get you there too. It is worth acquiring a book on Yoga breathing exercises though as deep breathing will strengthen other, upper abdominal muscles.

It is best to set yourself realizable objectives and then extend them when you have been able to reach them for, say, a week without it taxing you too much. If you find that you have over-extended yourself, just take a few minutes break and then carry on.

When you can do the distance without the rest for a week without feeling way over tired, lengthen it again, but not so much as last time. You will soon be able to walk and swim further than you could before you got back pain. A bonus is that you will also be losing weight which will take strain off your back, further decreasing your back pain.

By the time you can walk 500 yards and swim 500 yards without feeling breathless, you will almost certainly have lost 5-10 pounds or more and you will be feeling much better for it.

All back pain hurts, consequently its name, but not all back pain is a result of a serious back condition. Sometimes, backache is a result of sitting badly, sleeping awkwardly or twisting violently. These backaches are the result of strain rather than injury or bone disease. It is possible to cure these reasons of backache in different and similar methods to long term back pain.

For instance, bed rest for a day or two can relieve a sprain, but it is no good for long tern back pain. An example of a strategy that works for both sorts of back pain is cold and hot pads, but they are merely short term cures.

So, if you have pulled a muscle in your back, your first option might be to paracetamol or Ibuprofen. If that does not help, you could try putting an ice pack on the small of your back and then placing hot towels in the same place. This gives temporary relief (a couple of hours) to a lot of sufferers.

A physical therapy that works extremely well for many of back sprains is a massage. A regular massage is sufficient to counter back strain, but it will not touch real back pain for which you require a trained physiotherapist. However, for regular back pain a gentle oil massage is a great help.

You might find that you will get relief from a session in a Turkish Bath or sauna too. Backache due to a strain should not last longer than three to five days, if it does, you might have something else going on, unfortunately, and you ought to seek specialized medical opinion.

Short-term relief from a sore back may be had by rubbing into the affected area a cream that creates a warm feeling – these creams are often referred to as deep heat. Deep heat will rarely help with pain caused by a trapped nerve, but can help with a sprain.

A hot bath can help as well, even a hot shower, but less so. A soak in a hot tub with bath salts or aromatic oils will help with mild aches in your back and is a worthwhile idea before retiring to bed at night. The relaxing soak in a bath with salts will make you sleepy which may help you get through the night without the tenderness waking you up.

Pay close attention to how you sit. Your feet ought to remain flat on the floor while you sit at a table. Your thighs should be parallel with the ground at all times. There should be lower back support and you ought to hold your back straight.

While you are sitting at the table, your elbows ought to reach the table top without you having to adjust your position to accomplish this.

If you cannot sit like this, get an adjustable office chair and adjust it to suit. It is far better to take heed of these warning, temporary back sprains, before they become a serious difficulty.

The old manner of treating back pain was rest and pain killers. In fact, I was advised two months ago when my back pain started to go to bed for a month. However, more modern thoughts on the subject are that modest exercise is better for your back.

I, for one, could not lie in bed for a month because of backache, because whilst my back was at its worst, I could not rest in one position for over a minute or two and sleep was practically impossible.

I was in too much pain to travel to the GP’s surgery and I was not given a home visit. So, I merely sat at home and waited to get better. Then my wife arranged a masseur to come around.

The massage helped, but she also gave me some stretching exercises to try, which I have since seen recommended by some physiotherapists on the Net.

To begin with, she suggested strolling as far as I could each day. Set achievable goals, but extend them whenever you reach them. Permit yourself one rest on both the outward and homeward journeys and after a time, try to do without the pause.

This has helped very well for me and from not being able to walk to the bathroom a month ago, I bin now walk around 350 yards without a stop. I place most of the reason for my recovery, such as it is, down to walking.

I have a slipped disc and a trapped sciatic nerve, so leaning backwards was agony for me (and still hurts), but I found that rotating at the hips helps loosen things up.

There are two methods, I do this: 1] place you hands on your hips and push down or 2] clasp your hands behind your head; then standing with feet apart or sitting on a chair with no back, revolve your upper body as low as you can in a circle to the right eight times and then to the left. Increase the repetitions as and when you are able.

Sitting on a chair with a high back, reach back over your shoulders and grip the back of the chair (or you may clasp the sides of the chair). Then keeping your bottom still, try to turn to the left eight times and then to the right. Do it slowly, no erratic movements, but really push.

Lying on your back, bring one knee up to your body; pull it if you need to. First one knee eight times, then the other, and then both together. A variation on this is to lie on the floor, bend your knees and place your feet flat on the floor. Then put one foot on the other knee and pull that knee towards you. The second version can also be done seated.

Lying on your back, lift your straight legs as high as you can, keeping them together. You will probably not manage much, so get someone to push them right up to ninety degrees and hold. Push them more towards your face. Lift your posterior off the ground if you like. It sounds as if this one will really hurt, but it was all right for me.

These exercises were recommended to me by a personal masseur who has been extremely well trained. They are to suit my situation, so perhaps you had better take advice before trying them yourself.

Injuries in sports training are quite common, but what is astonishing is that they are not more common. Whilst training or exercising, you are in fact putting your body through more than normal duress – no pain, no gain, is the mantra – so the likelihood of injury are more than normal as well.

A good trainer will point this out to the students, make them wear all the right protective gear and do warm up exercises before the real training session begins. However, this is not always enough and in some sports, like weight lifting, technique has to be excellent too.

Some of the risks are more widespread if people choose to cut corners and train at home without sufficient knowledge of safety procedures. This is a fact of weight lifting, but also of jogging.and cycling.

Often inexpert joggers and cyclists will go out on the roads without the proper safety apparatus or under weather conditions where motorists can scarcely see them. Just last week, a disabled wheelchair racer was knocked into a river by a passing car whilst on a dawn training run.

Cycling on our busy roads has become a perilous sport and many motorists will admit to a close encounter where they have not seen a cyclist until the last moment. A cyclist should always wear a crash helmet to avoid head and spinal injuries.

It s vital to wear the correct shoes for whatever sport you are practicing. It just will not suffice to purchase a pair of trainers and wear them to the gym, out running and out clubbing as well. Running shoes will absorb shock waves that otherwise could hurt your back, whereas boots for weight training will give more support to the ankles.

It is fairly natural to try to save money on a coach, but the time to do this is after you are aware of how to keep yourself safe and sound, not before. Having said that, exercising alone is always inadvisable in case something goes wrong.

Weight lifters sometimes miss the rack while bench pressing and joggers sometimes slip or get hit by a vehicle miles from anywhere.

If your child wants to train, be certain that it knows the risk of long term pain from back injury that can so easily occur if weights are lifted in an incorrect manner or if a jogger gets hit by a car because they could not be seen.

Swimming is also a seemingly innocuous sport, but one which results in injury and death each year because the swimmer has failed to follow basic safety precautions like warming up before swimming in cold water, checking currents and waiting at least an hour after eating before entering the water.

The sports mentioned above are quite fundamental, but many individuals are into what are called extreme sports where the risks of back and other injuries are multiplied. Instances of these range from martial arts, through hang gliding to skateboarding.

There are usually early warning signs that backache is about to strike. Common backache is usually caused by straining or bad posture. If you are doing something in the wrong fashion, you will usually feel it. If you persist, you will throw your back out. It is fairly rare to actually damage your back in a solitary movement.

One awkward movement can give you days or even weeks of back pain, but long term back pain is usually due to you having been doing something in the wrong way for quite some time and that one stretch, lift or twist that put your back out was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Jogging is a very well-liked exercise, but jogging and running in general may result in back pain. At first this does not appear to make sense, but the factors are simple.

1] Most individuals do not even walk enough let alone run enough, so our back muscles are not used to it;

2] most joggers run on concrete or tarmac which is solid – there is no give at all and the shock waves are taken up by our backs

3] you need good trainers (or, arguably, no footwear at all), if you are going to run a lot.

(Some runners say that running barefoot is better than running in poor footwear, because you will notice sooner when your back has suffered sufficient punishment).

I once had weeks of backache after doing my tax returns. Although I work at a desk every day in my office, I chose to do my tax returns seated on the couch on a Sunday afternoon while watching TV.

After an hour or two, I had a twinge but thought nothing of it. After six hours, I had completed my returns and I could feel a minor problem in my back. The next day I could hardly walk. I had strained a muscle that I hardly ever used with poor posture.

If you feel any of the warning twinges in your back that are tell-tale signs that you are doing something wrong, halt and try to analyze what you are doing. Is it an action that you hardly ever perform or is it one that you have been performing slightly badly for years? The latter is worse than the former and could lead to long term back pain.

If you believe that some task at work is causing the difficulty, you should mention it to a manager and endeavou to havet it placed in the Accident Book.

Once you get home, lie on the floor in the foetal position and curl up tight for an hour. This might soothe the pain away, if it is just a mild strain and will probably give short-term relief if the pain is from a more serious cause.

Always try to nip the cause of back pain in the bud as soon as your body alerts you that there is a difficulty, because if you ignore it, you could easily be up for more serious problems down the line.

Back ache may start from seemingly very insignificant origins and it may come from significant trauma. Individuals should be made to be aware that small things can lead to years of backache and perhaps early retirement.

Back ache may start from seemingly very insignificant origins and it may come from significant trauma. Individuals should be made to be aware that small things can lead to years of backache and perhaps early retirement.

In my case, my wife and I were visiting a friend of hers and she offered to give me a massage. My wife approved because of their friendship and because her friend had studied as a masseuse ten years before.

The massage progressed well and she kept asking me whether she was hurting me. She was not, therefore I said no. She stood on the rear of my thighs and asked again. I said no. She said that she had never massaged a white man before and that my muscles were tighter than she was used to.

So, she began striking the back of my left thigh with her heel. Again she asked if it was painful. It did not. Anyway, she completed the massage and we all had a lovely evening. The next day, my left thigh was sore and I had to limp a little. This lasted a few of days and then went away.

A week later, I could hardly walk, limping badly on my left leg. That lasted a month and then my lowest disc slipped out of position. I am still suffering from a slipped or herniated disc as a result of a month of poor posture which was the result of a free massage.

That is how easily it can occur. You do something daft like wearing tight shoes; you acquire a limp and the limp so alters your posture that it puts your back out. If I had known then what I know now, I would not have limped around for a month, I would have rested up.

Take my example as a significant warning, you can get permanent back ache from the stupidest of things. A friend of mine has had back pain for thirty years and he remembers the day it happened. He was in the bathroom and twisted to his right to reach for the toilet paper.

Bang! Thirty years of back pain and early retirement.

Be very careful of lifting, pushing and manoeuvring items in general. If your work involves physical work, make sure that your employer or supervisor shows you the safest ways of doing so. Make certain that you use the same ways at home in your private life.

A last suggestion is to remember that we are living longer than ever before, but that means that bones have been wearing out for longer. Bear that in mind, if you are getting on. You might no longer be able to do what you could do merely 10 years ago even if you are healthy.

Help your body live a longer time without injury by exercising it and giving it at least the recommended daily amounts (RDA) of vitamins that it needs to replenish itself.
